Vice President JD Vance pushed back Tuesday against what he described as misleading media narratives surrounding Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations, after a video circulated showing federal agents arresting a woman during an enforcement action in Minneapolis, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.
The confrontation unfolded after ICE agents stopped a woman who was driving on a street that had been blocked during an enforcement operation. The woman claimed she was attempting to reach a doctor’s appointment.
After a verbal exchange, agents broke her car window, removed her from the vehicle, and placed her under arrest. Video of the incident showed the woman screaming as agitators clashed with federal officers. Authorities deployed pepper balls and tear gas to disperse the crowd.
The footage sparked widespread reaction online, including criticism from former ABC News reporter Terry Moran, who compared ICE agents to “masked gangs” and contrasted the Trump administration’s enforcement tactics with those used during the Obama administration.
“Barack Obama deported more than 3 million people from this country while he was president,” Moran wrote on X.
“No masked gangs descending on neighborhoods, snatching ordinary working people from their cars and disappearing them, storming homes without judicial warrants,” he added. “This is just force, not law.”

Vance responded publicly, rejecting Moran’s comparison and disputing the premise that Obama-era deportation numbers reflected tougher enforcement.
He argued that the claims relied on misleading statistics and ignored the realities facing federal agents today.
“This argument is just entirely fake, for two reasons,” Vance wrote, before outlining what he said were key facts omitted from media coverage.
“1) In the Obama administration, they counted being turned away at the border as a deportation. A person would show up, be sent back, and counted as a deportation. We have to do deportations from the interior of the country because Biden and Harris let them walk in.”
Vance added that enforcement encounters differ dramatically depending on whether local governments cooperate with federal authorities.
“2) In the cities that are not sanctuary cities, the deportation process is orderly and normal–like most law enforcement. In Minneapolis and a few other sanctuary jurisdictions, local jurisdictions and a few leftwing agitators have decided to wage war on all immigration enforcement officers.”
He concluded by rejecting claims that public disorder would force the administration to abandon enforcement.
“They are hoping that a little chaos will convince us to give up on immigration enforcement. They are wrong.”

Federal officials have said the Minneapolis incident escalated due to interference by activists, not because of unlawful conduct by agents. ICE has maintained that its officers were carrying out lawful duties and faced harassment before taking enforcement action.
The episode has intensified debate over immigration enforcement tactics, particularly in sanctuary jurisdictions where local officials limit cooperation with federal authorities.
Minneapolis leaders have previously criticized ICE operations, while federal officials argue that resistance by local governments increases the risk of confrontation during arrests.
The Trump administration has continued to emphasize interior enforcement as a priority, citing the large number of illegal aliens released into the country during the previous administration.
Vance’s response reflects broader frustration within the administration over what it views as selective reporting and attempts to recast Obama-era immigration policies as stricter than current enforcement.
As the debate continues, federal officials have indicated that ICE operations will proceed regardless of political backlash or protests in sanctuary cities.
