Vandals Send a Message to Washington Democrat

Rep. Marie Glusenkamp Perez is a Washington Democrat who is a bit of an odd duck. For one thing, she was one of only 7 Democrats who, last month, voted in favor of a DHS funding bill that includes money for ICE.

Gluesenkamp Perez represents Washington’s 3rd Congressional District, a notoriously purple district that includes Clark County and was held by a Republican for more than a decade until Gluesenkamp Perez was first elected in 2022. 

She has broken with her party several times, including voting yes in favor of the Republican funding bill that reopened the government after the last shutdown; a controversial election security bill, the SAVE Act; and censuring fellow Democrats. 

A total of seven House Democrats voted yes on the DHS funding bill on Thursday, which passed 220-207.

A few days after that vote, which upset a lot of Democrats, Glusenkamp Perez’s office in Vancouver was vandalized.

Over the weekend, someone threw red paint on a large sign in front of her office. Other people have left Post-It notes or large signs. One sign read, “You funded ICE, which is killing American citizens.” There has also been a peaceful candlelight vigil.

Kim Kapp, a spokeswoman with the Vancouver Police Department, said officers responded to the paint incident and took a report. No suspects have been identified.

Glusenkamp Perez, like everyone else, has condemned the shootings in Minneapolis and called for Kristi Noem to step down. But despite that she thinks the “defund ICE” movement within her party is a dumb idea.

She defended border security funding and characterized the growing “Defund ICE” movement as an “indiscriminate, overly aggressive slogan” and not a solution.

“We should not be forced into a false choice between having no border security and arresting US citizens,” she wrote in the Jan. 22 statement. “In a DHS shutdown, ICE would continue operating with limited oversight thanks to funding in the One Big Beautiful Bill, which I voted against. Meanwhile, agencies like the Coast Guard or FEMA — and communities like mine — would take the hit.”

She was attacked online as a hypocrite but hasn’t changed her mind. Last week, vandals targeted an auto body shop owned by her husband.

Dean’s Car Care, 1506 N.E. Lombard St., was damaged sometime on late Friday or early Saturday, according to a Portland Police Bureau spokesperson and an anonymous report issued on an anarchist blog.

Here’s a bit of what the anarchists had to say.

Last night we gave Dean’s Car Care in NE Portland a redecorating under cover of darkness. Dean’s is owned and operated by fascist sympathizing power-couple Dean Gluesenkamp and Washington State representative Marie Perez Gluesenkamp, a Democrat who voted in January for additional funding for ICE, enabling them to continue kidnapping and murdering our neighbors and occupying our cities. We sprayed “DEAN’S WIFE FUNDS ICE” across the side of the shop and drenched the storefront in bright orange with paintbombs made from hollowed out eggs. It was quick and easy fun, and a little exhilarating due to an unexpected burglary alarm activating from the impact of the paintbombs against the windows. We slipped back into the dark unseen, satisfied with our work and filled with the jouissance and freedom of criminality.

The message ends with a series of threat against the couple and their shop.

We promise total and unrelenting hostility towards ICE and their enablers. These f***ers should feel unsafe everywhere they go. They should be afraid to be seen out in public. They should be afraid to clock in at their workplaces and afraid to exist in their own homes.

Dean! You, your business, and your chopped-ass Nazi wife with her horrible bangs are not safe in Portland. We are always watching, and we are everywhere.

It would be great if police would make an effort to stop this kind of angry mob making threats but this is in Portland so don’t count on it.
