Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman pledged on Monday to take a hardline approach against looters exploiting the devastation caused by the region’s wildfires.
Hochman, who defeated former DA George Gascon in November, emphasized that his office would prioritize prosecuting individuals who take advantage of wildfire victims.
Speaking on America’s Newsroom with co-hosts Dana Perino and Bill Hemmer, Hochman warned looters that his office would use every legal tool available to prosecute them.

“We’re sending the same unmistakably clear message to them, that if they want to rip off people who have suffered these type of tragedies, we will come after you,” Hochman said.
“We will throw the entire book at you.”
Hochman, whose sister lost her home in the Pacific Palisades wildfire, noted the dual challenge of addressing crimes during and after the fires.
“I’m one of the people who has been evacuated. My sister lost her house in Pacific Palisades — and what we’ll do is we’ll first deal with people who are looting, people who are taking advantage of these crimes right now. Then we begin the recovery effort,” he explained.
The DA also highlighted concerns about potential fraud in the recovery process.
“Sadly, we’re going to have people who want to take advantage of the recovery money coming in from insurance or government benefits,” he said.
The wildfires have caused widespread destruction across the Los Angeles area, particularly in Pasadena and other localities.
At least 24 people have died, and hundreds of buildings have been destroyed as the fires rapidly spread.

The tragedy has left many residents vulnerable to opportunistic crimes, including looting.
Law enforcement has already made at least 20 arrests related to looting, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Among those taken into custody was an individual who allegedly posed as a firefighter, The New York Post reported.

Hochman assured the public that his office has the resources and personnel to handle these cases.
“We have over 750 deputy district attorneys, some of the finest lawyers or prosecutors in the nation,” he said.
“They are motivated and inspired to go ahead and help people, they always have been.”
The DA noted that his team had previously been constrained under Gascon’s leadership but is now ready to fully enforce the law.
“They haven’t had the opportunity… but they are all fired up right now to go help the residents of L.A. County get through this tragedy and make sure that the criminals who want to take advantage of them meet full justice in the system,” he said.

Hochman’s November victory marked a significant shift in the DA’s office after years of lenient policies under Gascon, who was supported by billionaire George Soros.
Hochman’s campaign focused on restoring law and order, and his approach to the wildfire crisis reflects his commitment to cracking down on crime and protecting victims.
As Los Angeles County continues to recover from the devastating wildfires, Hochman’s office is prioritizing the prosecution of looters and fraudsters seeking to exploit the tragedy.
With a reinvigorated team of prosecutors, the DA’s office aims to bring justice to victims and deter future crimes during this challenging time.
