President Donald Trump sharply criticized Virginia’s newly elected governor over proposals to raise taxes, warning that the policies could drive residents out of the state and undo years of economic progress made under Republican leadership.
The comments came in response to a reporter’s question about reports that Virginia officials are considering dozens of new tax increases following the change in leadership in Richmond.
“Virginia flipped the governor’s, and now they’re looking at 50 proposals to increase taxes. What do you think about that?” the reporter asked.

“Well, I think it’s terrible,” Trump replied. “I think a lot of people will leave Virginia.”
Trump contrasted the current administration’s approach with that of former Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin, whom he praised for prioritizing tax relief and economic growth during his time in office.
“I saw that, look, Glenn was a friend of mine, Glenn Youngkin, and worked so hard on cutting taxes,” Trump said.
“This woman came in, and in one swoop, she raised everything up higher than it ever was. I don’t understand it.”

According to Trump, the scope of the proposed increases represents a dramatic departure from traditional political messaging and voter expectations.
“She came into Virginia, raised everything to a point like no taxes that nobody ever even heard of before,” he said.
“And I don’t understand, how do people get elected with this kind of philosophy? This is only in the very modern age.”
Trump reflected on his own political upbringing and past campaign promises, noting that tax cuts were once considered a core issue across party lines.
“You know, I grew up and I’ve always heard politicians will cut taxes. ” We’ll cut everybody’s screaming, we’re going to cut taxes,” he said.
Trump then pointed to his own record in office, emphasizing what he described as historic tax relief measures enacted during his presidency.
“I cut taxes,” Trump said.
“I gave you the biggest tax cut in the history of our country, and the great, big, beautiful bill, no tax on tips, no tax on Social Security, no tax on overtime.”
He also highlighted provisions aimed at supporting consumers and domestic manufacturing.
“Interest deductions,” Trump said.
“Roger, when somebody buys a car, they can deduct the interest if they borrow money. That’s the biggest thing in terms of the car business, right? American made ones, correct?”
Trump framed the contrast as a clear divide between Republican and Democratic economic philosophies.
“So we have, you know, I give tax cuts, and they give tax increases,” he said.
“I don’t know how they get elected.”
Trump went on to suggest that electoral outcomes do not reflect public support for higher taxes or progressive social policies.
“They get elected because they cheat. You want to know the truth,” he said.
“If they didn’t cheat, if they didn’t cheat, they’d have no chance.”
He expanded his criticism beyond taxation, tying the Virginia proposals to broader Democratic policy positions.
“They have horrible policy, transgender for everyone,” Trump said.
“They have the little thing about open borders so that the world’s prison population and mental hospitals could be emptied into our country.”
Trump concluded by raising concerns about cultural and athletic issues, posing a rhetorical question during the exchange.
“It’s just crazy men playing in women’s sports,” he said.
“Roger, are you a fan of men playing in women’s sports? You’re not a big fan. I don’t think so.”
