Watch As Kamala Harris Forced To Relive Election Loss As Fellow Democrats Read Off Every Swing State Loss

As she certified the 2024 election, Vice President Kamala Harris was forced to listen to the results of her loss Monday in front of her fellow Democrats in Congress.

Congress convened Monday to certify the election results by its deadline, Jan. 6, 2025. The members of Congress voted to certify the election with no objections raised and Harris presided over the day as it is a role of the vice president’s office. Monday’s electoral college vote was 312-226. Before certifying the election, Harris listened to the election results of every state, including those she lost to Trump. The now president-elect defeated Harris in a landslide, taking all of the swing states. North Carolina and Georgia were the first two swing states called, erasing the Sun Belt path to victory for Harris by 11 p.m.

“The peaceful transfer of power is one of the most fundamental principles of American democracy. As much as any other principal, it’s what distinguishes our system of government from monarchy or tyranny. Today at the United States Capital, I will perform my constitutional duty as vice president of the United States, to certify the results of the 2024 election,” Harris said in a video message released ahead of the certification.

“This duty is a sacred obligation, one I will uphold, guided by level of country, loyalty to our constitution and my unwavering faith in the American people,” she added.

Only a few other vice presidents in U.S. history have had to preside over and certify their own election loss. Vice President John Breckinridge certified the 1860 election in 1861 after being defeated by Abraham Lincoln. Before making it into the White House himself, Richard Nixon, when vice president, certified John F. Kennedy’s victory in 1960.

Monday’s certification without any objections is the first time this century that Democrats won’t challenge the incoming GOP’s president’s electoral votes. Democrats have previously objected to the election of every Republican president since 2001.

Democrats attempted to block Bush’s certification in 2001 and in 2005, Democrats challenged the electoral vote count in Congress. Similarly, in 2017, Congressional Democrats attempted to block electoral votes as Joe Biden, then vice president, oversaw the certification of the election.
