Democratic Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis told a group of Somalis that he hoped to visit Somalia.
The video was posted to social media Thursday night.
United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is surging into the Minneapolis area to target illegal immigrants from Somalia after revelations of at least $1 billion in fraud. This prompted the Treasury Department to probe allegations that some funds went to the radical Islamic terrorist group Al-Shabaab. Frey, in the video posted on X, told people at the event that he was trying to learn Somali. (RELATED: Minneapolis’ Democrat Mayor Says City Will Resist Trump Response To Somali Scammer Scandal)
“While I’m a little bit busy right now, a few months from now, in the next year, I would very much like to visit Somalia,” Frey said. “This has been something that I would like to do for quite a long time. But to be there with my friends, to be there together. Walla — walla yalla? Walla yalla. Walaalayal. Walaalayal, my — my brothers and sisters. I’m learning.”

State employees accused Democratic Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota of engaging in “systemic” retaliation against whistleblowers who warned of the fraud schemes as the Justice Department prosecutes multiple federal cases. Walz admitted during a Nov. 30 appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that the state “attracts criminals” but demanded that Somali residents not be demonized.
In response to the allegations, President Donald Trump announced he would end “Temporary Protected Status” for Somalis in Minneapolis. He also said the influx of refugees had “destroyed our country.” Walz claimed that white men commit most crimes when asked Friday if Somali scammers would be held accountable.
