The war in Ukraine may finally be approaching a resolution, as Kyiv has agreed to a deal brokered by the Trump administration during a high-stakes meeting in Saudi Arabia. The next step? Russia’s response.
“We’ll take this offer now to the Russians, and we hope that they’ll say yes,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters.
While he didn’t disclose the full details of the agreement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s office confirmed that Kyiv has agreed to a 30-day ceasefire—provided Moscow accepts the terms, as reported by Fox News.

Rubio, flanked by National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, emphasized that the ball is now in Russia’s court. “We hope the Russians answer to that,” he said. “The best goodwill gesture the Russians can provide is to say yes.”
In response to Ukraine’s willingness to engage in a ceasefire, President Donald Trump immediately lifted the pause on U.S. security assistance and reinstated intelligence sharing. The move signals Washington’s commitment to supporting Kyiv while pushing for a broader peace deal.
Rubio made it clear that while this agreement could bring an end to the war, real negotiations will only begin once Russia formally agrees.
“This is very serious. Today people will die in this war. They died yesterday, and sadly, unless there’s a ceasefire tonight, they’ll die tomorrow. The president wants that to stop.”

Waltz echoed that sentiment, noting, “We’ve gone from if this war is going to end to how this war is going to end.”
While a ceasefire would be a critical first step, both Rubio and Waltz emphasized that more complicated issues—like the return of children abducted by Russia and prisoner exchanges—will be tackled in a “second phase” of negotiations.
During talks in Saudi Arabia, both delegations also discussed security guarantees to ensure long-term stability in Ukraine.
Although specifics were not disclosed, the readout from the talks confirmed that Kyiv and Washington had agreed to name negotiating teams and start formal discussions on a permanent resolution.
“The United States committed to discussing these specific proposals with representatives from Russia. The Ukrainian delegation reiterated that European partners shall be involved in the peace process.”
Beyond military and political concerns, there’s also the issue of resources. Rubio acknowledged that a mineral deal between Ukraine and the United States remains on the table, though it will be addressed later.
“We were here in pursuit of peace,” he said, “but that doesn’t mean the mineral deal is not very important.”
With the Trump administration’s push for a ceasefire gaining traction, all eyes are now on Moscow. Will Russia take the deal? Or will it prolong a war that could soon come to a negotiated end?
