As President Donald Trump’s administration swiftly implements policy changes, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) responded to questions about the Democratic Party’s reaction, making comments that have drawn attention.
Trump has wasted no time in rolling out new policies, with a strong focus on reversing many of the measures put in place by the Biden-Harris administration.
One of the most immediate and visible shifts has been in border security, where illegal crossings have reportedly dropped to record lows.

Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin noted the sharp decline, crediting the administration’s enforcement of existing immigration laws.
NEW: Per sources, Border Patrol recorded just 582 illegal crossings at the southern border yesterday, with not a single one of the nine sectors hitting 200.

NEW: Per sources, Border Patrol recorded just 582 illegal crossings at the southern border yesterday, with not a single one of the nine sectors hitting 200.
I’ve never seen anything this low in all of my border coverage. The numbers were already flat/low in Biden’s final week, bouncing between 1,200-1,400 illegal crossings daily, but the numbers have been falling off a cliff since Trump took office.Last three days
January 24 – 665
January 25 – 731
January 26 – 582To put this into perspective, at the height of the border crisis in December 2023, Border Patrol hit a record high 11,000+ illegal crossings across the border in a single day, with the Del Rio sector alone getting 4,000+.
I’m told there were 582 illegal crossings across the southern border yesterday, with only 60 happening in the Del Rio sector.
And there are no longer 1,500+ migrants being released at ports of entry via the CBP One cell phone app every single day, as Trump immediately terminated the program.
It’s still very early – we’ll see if these incredibly low numbers hold, especially heading into spring.
The rapid changes appear to have caught Democrats off guard, with little sign of an organized response.
When asked by a reporter about the party’s reaction to Trump’s actions in New York, Schumer’s response was vague but notable.
“The roots of democracy are deep,” Schumer said, urging people to reach out to their local representatives or senators to make their voices heard.
“People are aroused. I haven’t seen people so aroused in a very, very long time… I think democracy will have an effect… We are going to keep at it.”

His choice of words quickly sparked reactions, with many questioning what exactly he meant by “aroused” and what actions Democrats planned to take in response to Trump’s policies.
While Schumer attempted to project a sense of urgency, the atmosphere among Democratic lawmakers appeared anything but energized.
As he spoke, those standing nearby—including Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA)—appeared unenthusiastic, with Murray looking noticeably disengaged.
Schumer’s phrasing also led to confusion, with some commentators on both sides of the political spectrum noting the awkward wording.
His remarks come as Democrats face significant challenges in organizing opposition to Trump’s rapid policy shifts.
Since taking office, Trump’s administration has moved quickly to reinstate strict border enforcement policies.
Despite repeated claims from the Biden-Harris administration that legislative action was required to address immigration issues, Trump’s approach has demonstrated that enforcement of existing laws can yield immediate results.
Schumer’s response is indicative of the broader challenges facing Democrats, who have seen voters reject their policies in recent elections.
With Trump implementing significant changes within days of returning to office, the contrast between the two administrations has been stark.
As the political landscape continues to shift, it remains to be seen how Democrats will adapt.
For now, Schumer’s comments have only added to speculation about the party’s next move and whether they have a clear strategy to counter Trump’s policies.
