Radio host Charlamagne Tha God on Thursday expressed confusion over President Joe Biden hosting President-elect Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday.
Biden and Trump shook hands and exchanged brief remarks during their public meeting, with the president saying, “Welcome back” to the president-elect. Charlamagne, on “The Breakfast Club,” questioned how Biden could completely change his stance on Trump after labeling him as a threat to democracy. “I just don’t understand the White House visit. Now granted, you know, I’m glad it’s a peaceful transition of power, but what happened to the threat of democracy talk? What happened to the fascist talk?” Charlamagne questioned. “By the way, I know I’ve said those things about Trump as well, but I’m not talking about me. I’m talking about his political opponents, like President Biden. When they say it, it holds way more weight than me. I’m just trying to figure out, how do you go from, ‘He’s an existential threat to democracy’ to ‘Welcome back?’”
Co-host DJ Envy noted that Biden appeared “happy” during his White House meeting with Trump.
“I’m just trying to figure out how,” Charlamagne added. “I understand President Biden believes in political norms, but damn.”
Charlamagne on Friday also wondered whether Democrats ever genuinely thought Trump was “a threat to democracy” or “a fascist” after Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris optimistically addressed the presidential election results the previous day.
“Don’t y’all find it strange that now that he’s won, they’re not calling him a threat to democracy? They’re not calling him a fascist. I mean, damn, on Monday, they was just calling him that,” he said Friday. “I would think that, you know, if you really believe that, then somebody’s speech would be about how America ‘effed up and how things are about to be really bad. It just makes you wonder how much of it did they really believe, or how much of it was just politics. That’s all.”
Biden congratulated Trump on his reelection victory and pledged to implement a “smooth transition,” with the president-elect expressing gratitude, according to a transcript of their remarks.
“Politics is tough. And it’s, many cases, not a very nice world, but it is a nice world today,” Trump said. “And I appreciate it very much — a transition that’s so smooth, it’ll be as smooth as it can get. And I very much appreciate that, Joe.”
“You’re welcome,” Biden responded.
Biden and Harris had both stated that “democracy is on the ballot” in the lead-up to the election, with the vice president calling him a “fascist.”
