A 61-year-old Long Island man was killed in a tragic MRI accident after being pulled into the powerful machine by a 20-pound metal chain he was wearing, according to family members, as reported by The New York Post.

Keith McAllister died Wednesday afternoon at Nassau Open MRI in Westbury, where he had accompanied his wife, Adrienne Jones-McAllister, for a routine imaging appointment.

Family members say McAllister was led into the MRI room by a technician who failed to instruct him to remove his chain before entering.

“While my mother was laying on the table, the technician left the room to get her husband to help her off the table,” the couple’s daughter, Samantha Bodden, wrote in a GoFundMe post.

“He forgot to inform him to take the chain he was wearing from around his neck off when the magnet sucked him in.”

The MRI’s strong magnetic field immediately drew McAllister and the chain toward the machine, trapping him inside. According to Bodden, McAllister remained stuck for nearly an hour while staff and his wife attempted to free him before emergency responders arrived.

“My mother and the tech tried for several minutes to release him before the police were called,” Bodden stated.

The family disputes reports suggesting McAllister was not authorized to be in the room. “Several news stations are saying he wasn’t authorized to be in the room when in fact he was because the technician went and brought him into the room,” the family wrote.

MRI machines generate powerful magnetic fields capable of pulling in metal objects with significant force. In addition to the risk of blunt trauma, the magnetic energy can also cause metal to heat rapidly, potentially leading to burns.

Adrienne Jones-McAllister said her husband suffered multiple heart attacks during the ordeal, which ultimately proved fatal.

The family is now raising funds to cover funeral costs and has called for accountability from the imaging center. As of Monday, Nassau Open MRI has not issued a public statement regarding the incident, and no criminal charges or regulatory violations have been announced.

The incident is currently under investigation.
