Republican candidate Winsome Earle-Sears released a new campaign ad Monday attacking Democrat Abigail Spanberger over her support for policies related to transgender access to bathrooms, locker rooms, and sports in Virginia.
The ad highlights one of the central issues emerging in the state’s 2025 governor’s race: parental rights and transgender policies in schools.
Spanberger, a former congresswoman who served two terms before announcing her run for governor, has consistently aligned herself with Democratic leadership on issues of gender identity.

During her time in Washington, her voting record often mirrored that of the party’s progressive wing, despite her repeated claims of being a political moderate.
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) previously criticized Spanberger for what it described as her move toward the left.
“Abigail Spanberger talks like a so-called ‘moderate’ but her voting record tells a different story,” the NRCC said in a memo.
“Over the course of her tenure in Congress, Spanberger has been captured by the extreme left of her party, mirroring the hard-left lurch of Virginia Democrats.”

“Spanberger’s leftward drift has pushed her far to the left of voters in her swing district. The NRCC targeted Spanberger’s seat for the 2024 cycle and we are confident her recent votes have undercut her own carefully-constructed brand,” the statement continued.
Spanberger ultimately chose not to seek reelection in 2024, instead announcing her candidacy for governor.
The new Sears campaign ad, titled “Spanberger is For Them,” directly challenges Spanberger’s record on transgender policies.
A narrator in the ad states: “How liberal is Abigail Spanberger? She voted to allow men in girls’ sports, bathrooms, and locker rooms. Spanberger believes this ‘woman’ [photo of convicted sexual predator Richard Cox] has a right to undress next to young girls.”
The ad includes a clip of Spanberger saying, “Our LGBTQ neighbors have the same legal rights as anyone else.”
The narrator responds: “And if a child secretly identifies as transgender at school, she says the parents shouldn’t be told. That’s insane. Spanberger is for they them, not for us.”
The message closes with: “Vote Winsome Earle-Sears for governor. For common sense.”
In a press release accompanying the ad, Sears campaign spokesperson Peyton Vogel said: “Abigail Spanberger has turned her back on Virginia parents. She’s more interested in pleasing Washington liberals than protecting our daughters. While Spanberger sides with them, Winsome Earle-Sears is standing up for us. That’s the choice in this election: a governor who will defend Virginia families, or a politician who sells them out.”
The ad underscores a key strategy by Sears, who has sought to draw a clear distinction between her own positions and those of her Democratic opponent.
It also echoes messaging used in national Republican campaigns, including a 2024 Trump campaign ad targeting then-Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris.
The focus on Spanberger’s record regarding parental notification policies and transgender access comes as these issues continue to dominate school board meetings and legislative debates across Virginia.
With Spanberger portraying herself as a mother of three young daughters and Earle-Sears emphasizing her record on parental rights, both campaigns are framing the issue as central to their pitch to voters.
As the governor’s race intensifies, the debate over transgender policies in Virginia schools is expected to remain at the forefront,
with Sears continuing to press her case that Spanberger’s positions are out of step with the majority of Virginia parents.
