Wisconsin’s voter ID law will now be enshrined in the state constitution following voter approval on Tuesday, as confirmed by The Associated Press at 9:48 p.m. EST.
The Badger State’s existing requirement that voters present photo ID at the polls will now have constitutional protection, making it much harder to overturn.
The law, which has been in place for several years, will now be part of the state’s foundational legal framework after receiving approval through a proposal placed on the ballot by the Republican-controlled state legislature.

The amendment’s passage is part of a broader push by Republicans to strengthen election security in Wisconsin.
By moving the law to the constitution, lawmakers ensure that it is safeguarded from potential challenges in the courts.
As constitutional amendments must be approved by two legislative sessions and the statewide electorate, the amendment’s passage shields it from being easily overturned, even if Democrats regain control in future elections.
State Senator Van Wanggaard, a Republican who co-authored the amendment, praised the measure, stating that it would “help maintain integrity in the electoral process, no matter who controls the Legislature.”

The approval of the proposal was met with widespread celebration among GOP lawmakers, including from President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

Opponents of the proposal, who generally oppose photo ID requirements, argue that the law could disproportionately affect certain groups, including people of color, disabled individuals, and low-income voters.
Critics contend that the law could make voting more difficult for these communities due to concerns about uneven enforcement of the ID requirement.
Wisconsin is now among nine states that require voters to present photo identification at the polls.
According to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), Wisconsin has some of the strictest photo ID requirements in the nation.
Additionally, 36 states have laws that either require or request some form of identification to vote.
The decision to enshrine the law in the state constitution will likely be seen as a significant victory for those advocating for tighter election security.
Supporters argue that photo ID laws help ensure that elections are free from fraud and maintain public confidence in the integrity of the voting process.
