Washington Mystics guard Jade Melbourne was forced to leave Thursday night’s game against the Las Vegas Aces after taking an elbow to the face that resulted in a bloody injury and a chipped tooth, as reported by the New York Post.

The incident occurred in the first quarter at Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas. Melbourne, 22, was defending Aces guard Chelsea Gray when Gray attempted to cut around a screen.

As she moved, Gray’s elbow rose and struck Melbourne directly in the mouth. The impact immediately caused visible bleeding and led to a cracked tooth.

Melbourne covered her face and was quickly escorted off the court by medical staff. She did not return to play but came back to the Mystics’ bench later in the game. Officials reviewed the play and issued Gray a flagrant foul.

Though Melbourne’s night ended after just one minute on the court, her team secured a strong win. The Mystics defeated the defending champion Aces 94-83 on the road, marking their third consecutive victory.

Rookie guard Sonia Citron led Washington with 21 points. The win brings the Mystics to an even 8–8 record, placing them sixth in the WNBA standings.

Melbourne is currently averaging 6.5 points per game while shooting 40 percent from the field across 23.5 minutes. She is in her third season in the WNBA and her second with the Mystics.

Originally drafted 33rd overall by the Seattle Storm in 2022, Melbourne did not play in the WNBA that year. Instead, she remained in Australia, playing for the Canberra Capitals in the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL).

She has been with the Capitals since 2021 and averaged 16.3 points, 7.6 assists, and 5.1 rebounds in the 2023–24 season.

The Mystics have not yet announced whether Melbourne will miss any time due to the injury.
