In a move that left jaws on the floor, Democratic Rep. Kristine Reeves from Washington state drew a stunning comparison between efforts to preserve fairness in women’s sports and the historical stain of racial segregation, as reported by Fox News.
Speaking during a House Education Committee executive session, Reeves didn’t hold back, painting Republican-backed legislation as a civil rights atrocity in modern form.
The bill in question, SB 5123, seeks to clarify student protections, including those involving gender expression and identity. But it was an amendment that would limit biological males from participating in girls’ sports that sparked Reeves’ firebrand remarks.

Channeling personal history, Reeves said:
“I recall a time in our country’s history not that long ago … where people like my grandfather were told that they could not participate in sporting activities because he was a Black man.”
She doubled down, claiming that scientific studies used to support trans athlete restrictions mirror the pseudo-science once used to dehumanize Black Americans.
“We are repeating history, Madam Speaker, in this debate and it is very, very scary to me that we are making a lot of the same arguments today about this subset of our population that my grandfather, my grandmother and my grandparents had to be subjected to for years, being told that they were less-than, that they didn’t deserve the same rights as other people because of the color of their skin.”

That argument didn’t fly with Republicans on the panel, who quickly fired back with facts, not feelings.
Rep. Michael Keaton hit the brakes on Reeves’ narrative, saying:
“This particular amendment is focused on athletic participation, and one thing that doesn’t change is bone density, lung capacity, and the ability that a male has versus a female. There’s been too many stories already this year of females being hurt, or females working their entire life to accomplish a goal and to be able to be successful in something, dedicate their life to it, and then a male changes categories and takes it all away from them.”
Rep. Travis Couture followed suit, refusing to let history be rewritten to fit a political agenda. “This isn’t about the black-eye in history of our race relations,” he said.
“We’re going backwards in history, not forwards.”
He argued that Reeves’ idea of “evolving” was really a devolution — a slide back to a pre-Title IX era where women had to fight tooth and nail for equal footing in sports.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump’s administration is already taking action to restore sanity. Last month, Trump signed an executive order aligning Title IX protections with biological sex — effectively undoing Joe Biden’s 2024 woke rewrite.
The Trump administration made clear that federal dollars won’t go to institutions that refuse to comply.
The University of Pennsylvania, currently under investigation for potential Title IX violations, saw $175 million in federal funding put on hold. And Maine, thumbing its nose at the law, has found itself in a tug-of-war with the administration over compliance.
Bottom line? While the left tries to drag sports policy into the realm of identity politics and guilt-tripping historical analogies, conservatives are keeping their eyes on reality: girls’ sports are for girls, period.
