Former Red Sox player Kevin Youkilis publicly criticized Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., following her remarks about a violent attack targeting a pro-Israel demonstration in Boulder, Colorado, over the weekend.

The event, a run/walk held in support of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas, ended in chaos when a man allegedly used incendiary devices to burn several participants.

Ocasio-Cortez responded to the incident in a Monday social media post, writing, “My heart is with the victims and our Jewish communities across the country. Antisemitism is on the rise here at home, and we have a moral responsibility to confront and stop it everywhere it exists.”

I am horrified by last night’s horrific attack in Boulder. My heart is with the victims and our Jewish communities across the country.

Antisemitism is on the rise here at home, and we have a moral responsibility to confront and stop it everywhere it exists.

Youkilis, who is Jewish and a two-time World Series champion, questioned Ocasio-Cortez’s response and called out what he described as a pattern of repetitive reactions rather than action.

In a post on X, Youkilis wrote, “Jews are targeted with violence and it’s the same virtue signal post time and time again. What have you done to confront those calling for intifadas in NYC? Until you create a plan of action, your repeated virtue signaling after the violence occurs holds no weight.”

Youkilis spent the majority of his baseball career with the Boston Red Sox and played for the New York Yankees in 2013 before retiring.

When asked what action he expected from Ocasio-Cortez, he replied, “Confront the radical mobs chanting for intifadas in NYC. That would be brave leadership, but we know politicians, on both sides of the aisle, shy away in fear of losing votes and power.”

The comments refer to pro-Palestinian protests in New York City, where demonstrators have used charged language, including calls for intifada—a term associated with past waves of violent conflict between Palestinians and Israelis.

Ocasio-Cortez previously faced scrutiny for characterizing anti-Israel demonstrations at Columbia University as “peaceful,” despite reports of Jewish students being advised to leave campus due to safety concerns. Footage from the university showed some students expressing sympathy for Hamas.

Sunday’s attack in Boulder was described by the FBI as a “targeted terror attack.”

Authorities arrested 45-year-old Mohamed Sabry Soliman, who allegedly threw multiple homemade incendiary devices at participants of the Run for Their Lives event at Pearl Street Mall.

Witness video showed a shirtless man—believed to be Soliman—standing with two more devices in hand following the initial attack.

He was eventually taken into custody after law enforcement officers arrived on scene. Eight individuals were injured, with victims ranging in age from 52 to 88. One person remains in critical condition.

Soliman reportedly first entered the United States on a non-immigrant visa in August 2022.

That visa expired in February 2023, but he remained in the country.

Records show that Soliman obtained a work permit from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in March 2023, valid through March 2024.

At the time of Sunday’s attack, Soliman had once again overstayed his visa and was residing in the U.S. illegally.

The Run for Their Lives event was organized to raise awareness about the ongoing captivity of Israeli hostages held by Hamas following the October 2023 attacks.

Organizers have held similar events nationwide to highlight the plight of families still awaiting news of their loved ones.

As of now, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez has not issued any additional statement in response to Youkilis’s remarks.

The suspect, Soliman, remains in federal custody and is expected to face terrorism-related charges.
