A newly released book paints a damning picture of the inner circle around President Joe Biden, with a particular focus on First Lady Jill Biden’s top aide, Anthony Bernal, who is described by White House staffers as “the worst person they had ever met.”
As Fox News reported, Original Sin, authored by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios political reporter Alex Thompson, explores the internal dynamics of the Biden administration, particularly amid growing scrutiny over the president’s cognitive state and the reported efforts to conceal it.
According to the book, Jill Biden is seen by staff as one of the most powerful first ladies in U.S. history, and her influence elevated Bernal’s position to one of the most influential inside the West Wing.

The authors describe him as a central figure in enforcing loyalty to the Biden family, often at the expense of dissenting voices.
“He would not be welcome at my funeral,” one longtime Biden aide reportedly told the authors, underscoring the deep resentment some colleagues had toward Bernal.
Tapper and Thompson describe him as using loyalty as a political tool to sideline others, even earning the nickname “leader of the loyalty police” among staff.
The book details how Bernal, along with aide Annie Tomasini, became core members of the Biden family’s inner circle during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With access to the residence and privileges uncommon for political staffers — including badges marked “Res” — both operated closely with the president and first lady.

Their rise, according to the book, symbolized a shift in power: “not to the presidency, not to the American people, not to the country, but to the Biden theology,” the authors wrote.
Bernal and Tomasini were reportedly behind questionable campaign decisions, including loading a teleprompter for Biden before a local interview.
Bernal, the book claims, frequently disparaged fellow aides and kept track of those he believed were disloyal. Staffers described him as dismissive of concerns about Biden’s age or polling in battleground states.
When speculation emerged about Vice President Kamala Harris possibly launching a campaign, Bernal reportedly replied, “You don’t run for four years – you run for eight.”
Even following the widely criticized debate performance in July 2024, Bernal and Jill Biden continued strategizing for the November election, pushing forward despite rising public concern over the president’s condition.
One former White House staffer issued a defense of Bernal, stating: “Anthony was a strong leader with high standards and a mentor to many. He’s incredibly strategic, effective, and cares deeply about the people he manages.”
Neither Jill Biden nor Bernal responded to requests for comment.
