A man who allegedly attempted to rob a couple at Penn Station in Manhattan on Wednesday evening was shot after discovering that his intended victims were both off-duty police officers.

The incident occurred at approximately 7 p.m. on a Long Island Rail Road platform, according to a spokesperson for the New York Police Department.

The officers, a husband and wife, were in plainclothes and waiting for their train after finishing their assignments at the United Nations General Assembly.

Stewart was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.

Hospital officials listed him in stable condition as of Wednesday night.

The NYPD said Stewart did not appear to have a firearm, but investigators believe he may have been attempting to simulate a weapon during the confrontation.

The two officers sustained minor injuries during the altercation but did not require hospitalization.

Commuters on the busy platform witnessed the aftermath of the shooting.

WABC-TV reported that passengers boarding a train to Ronkonkoma were stunned as police responded to the bleeding suspect during peak rush hour.

Authorities arrested Stewart at approximately 3:40 a.m. Thursday.

He was charged with assault and attempted robbery.

Law enforcement sources told WABC that Stewart had five prior unsealed arrests on charges including assault and menacing.

He was reportedly living in a Brooklyn shelter at the time of Wednesday’s incident.

One of Stewart’s assault arrests occurred just one month prior to the Penn Station confrontation.

The NYPD has not released the names of the off-duty officers involved, citing safety protocols.

Officials confirmed the shooting is under routine internal review, which is standard procedure whenever a service weapon is discharged.
