Journalist and political commentator Batya Ungar-Sargon sharply criticized Democratic leadership and liberal elites over a massive fraud case involving federal funds, arguing the scandal reflects deeper failures within the Democratic Party and its approach to mass migration and government oversight.
Ungar-Sargon made the remarks while addressing revelations that suspected Somali fraudsters allegedly stole billions of dollars from federal programs tied to childcare and healthcare services.
She described the scope of the alleged fraud as staggering and said it should not come as a surprise given what she characterized as long-standing neglect and complicity by Democratic elites.
“This scandal is totally appalling, but it is also unsurprising, and that’s because it’s a microcosm of what ails the democratic elites,” Ungar-Sargon said.
She continued, “That’s our why it matters segment for the night, the latest revelations join others in which suspected Somali fraudsters stole more than $9 billion in federal funds from 14 state run agencies dating back to 2018 Somali Americans make up 89% of the defendants charged.”
Ungar-Sargon questioned how such widespread fraud could have gone undetected for years, raising concerns about oversight failures at multiple levels of government.
“The absolute scale of the fraud just beggars belief. Where were the spot checks? Where were the officials?” she said.
“It seems totally impossible that the Democratic leadership was not somehow in on this.”

She contrasted the alleged misuse of taxpayer funds with the financial pressures faced by working-class Americans, particularly families struggling with childcare, housing, and healthcare costs.
“Just think about how outrageous This is. You are wondering whether you can afford to have another child because child care is so expensive,” Ungar-Sargon said.
“Meanwhile, a group of Somalis in Minnesota got $110 million for child care centers that don’t exist.”
Ungar-Sargon continued by pointing to luxury purchases allegedly made with misappropriated funds.
“You can’t afford to buy a home, but 100 Somalis spent millions on luxury properties, millions of your taxpayer dollars,” she said.
She also criticized alleged healthcare fraud tied to nonexistent services.
“You’re paying $30,000 a year for terrible health care, and they got millions for health care centers that they never opened for patients that they never serviced.”
According to Ungar-Sargon, the fraud case illustrates broader consequences of Democratic immigration and economic policies.
“But the fraud is a microcosm of an illness that plagues our political elites, especially on the left,” she said.
“More broadly, everybody comes before you.”
She argued that decades of Democratic support for mass migration has harmed American workers by lowering wages and increasing competition for essential resources.
“For decades, the Democrats have pushed for mass migration, both legal and illegal, which drove down the wages of working class Americans while making competition for housing, health care and an education, the hallmarks of the American dream even fiercer,” Ungar-Sargon said.
Ungar-Sargon also criticized how objections to these policies have been treated by Democratic leaders and media figures.
“And if you objected, if you had the audacity to ask why your children were being disinherited in your country, the Democratic elites called you racist,” she said.
She accused liberal elites of using political language to deflect criticism while ignoring the economic consequences for working Americans.
“Leftist American elites developed an entire woke vocabulary as a smoke screen to mask the mass pillaging of the American working class,” Ungar-Sargon said.
“They smeared hard working people who work 10 times harder than they do, by the way, and make a fraction as much when those working class Americans objected to having their jobs sent overseas and those jobs that remained here degraded by a glut of cheap labor.”
Ungar-Sargon concluded by saying public anger over the Somali fraud case reflects deeper resentment toward political and media institutions.
“Millionaires on cable news called you racist if you said, Wait a minute, why don’t my kids matter?” she said.
“That’s why people are so angry about the Somali fraud case. It is the epitome of the fraud perpetrated on the American people through the collusion of the Democratic Party, the liberal media and people willing to take advantage of the immense generosity of the American people and then spit in our faces.”
