Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued a public message of thanks to President Donald Trump and the United States following a private meeting during the NATO summit in The Hague on Wednesday, as reported by Fox News.

The gesture comes months after a high-profile Oval Office confrontation involving Zelenskyy, Trump, and Vice President J.D. Vance, in which Zelenskyy was called out for failing to express gratitude for American support.

On Wednesday, Zelenskyy posted a message on X following his meeting with President Trump in the Netherlands, saying the two discussed key priorities for ending the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

“We covered all the truly important issues. I thank Mr. President, I thank the United States. We discussed how to achieve a ceasefire and a real peace,” Zelenskyy wrote.

“We spoke about how to protect our people. We appreciate the attention and the readiness to help bring peace closer. Details will follow.”

The message marked a sharp contrast from Zelenskyy’s February visit to the White House, where he exchanged heated words with both Trump and Vice President Vance over Ukraine’s resistance to pursuing diplomatic efforts.

During that meeting, which was open to media, Vance pressed Zelenskyy directly.

“I’m talking about the kind of diplomacy that’s going to end the destruction of your country,” Vance told the Ukrainian leader after Zelenskyy questioned the idea of negotiating with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“What kind of diplomacy, JD, you are speaking about?” Zelenskyy said at the time. “What do you mean?”

Vance responded:

“Mr. President, with respect, I think it’s disrespectful for you to come into the Oval Office to try to litigate this in front of the American media. Right now, you guys are going around and forcing conscripts to the front lines because you have manpower problems. You should be thanking the president for bringing it, to bring it into this country.”

Following that Oval Office encounter, Trump stated that peace negotiations would be put on hold, and he told Zelenskyy he would be welcome back to the White House when he was “ready” for peace.

Later that day, Zelenskyy issued a post on X thanking the United States, Trump, Congress, and the American people for their continued support for Ukraine.

Since then, the two leaders have had additional contact, including a private meeting at Pope Francis’ funeral in Vatican City this April. Trump and Zelenskyy also recently spoke by phone.

On Wednesday, Trump told reporters his administration has faced difficulties trying to finalize a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia.

“Vladimir Putin has been more difficult,” Trump said. “Frankly, I had some problems with Zelenskyy. You may have read about him, and it’s been more difficult than other wars.”

Despite those issues, Trump said his recent meeting with Zelenskyy was productive.

“He’s very nice, actually,” Trump said. “A little rough at times. He couldn’t have been nicer. I think he’d like to see an end to this.”
