Border Patrol agents did not release a single illegal migrant into the United States in May 2025, a dramatic shift from the 64,000 illegal crossers who were allowed into the country during the same month in 2024 under President Joe Biden, according to internal data obtained by The New York Post.

Presidential candidate Joe Biden speaks at the National Urban League conference at the Indiana Convention Center on Thursday, July 25, 2019.

Agents apprehended 8,725 individuals attempting to cross the southern border illegally last month, representing a 93% decrease compared to May 2024, when 117,905 migrants were apprehended.

The sharp decline comes after the Trump administration reversed President Biden’s catch-and-release policy, which had allowed large numbers of illegal border crossers to enter the country while awaiting immigration hearings.

The policy change is part of a broader effort to regain control over the southern border and reduce illegal immigration.

“Under the leadership of this administration, CBP has received historic support resulting in another 93% decrease in illegal crossings along the southwest border this month when compared with last year,” acting Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Pete Flores said in a statement to The Post.

“Border numbers continue to trend at historic lows, reinforcing the sustained success of our enforcement efforts in securing the homeland and protecting American communities,” he added.

Officials say the Trump administration’s focus on enforcement has restored agent resources to active border patrol duties, helping to deter unlawful crossings and regain operational control of the U.S.–Mexico border.

National Border Patrol Council President Paul Perez told The Post that the difference on the ground is significant.

“Under the Biden administration, our agents were pulled off the line. We were doing all the processing, detaining, transporting, and essentially baby-sitting — the border was wide open.”

“It was unsecured because we didn’t have enough agents on the line to actually protect and deter. So now we’ve got the complete opposite. All of our agents are actually patrolling the border for the first time in many, many years,” he said.

Perez also noted that Border Patrol is approaching full “operational control” of the border — a longstanding goal that had not been realized in previous administrations.

The new enforcement measures under President Trump have been widely credited with the significant reduction in illegal border traffic, according to federal officials involved in day-to-day operations.
