New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani made a surprise late-night television appearance Monday, stepping onto the stage of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to deliver a joke about the city’s deep freeze as a major winter storm blanketed the region, as reported by The New York Post.
Mamdani appeared unannounced during host Jimmy Fallon’s opening monologue, which focused heavily on frigid temperatures and heavy snowfall that hit New York City over the weekend.
The city was still digging out after Winter Storm Fern dropped more than 11 inches of snow across parts of the metropolitan area, combined with bitter cold conditions.

Fallon had been delivering a series of jokes centered on just how cold it had become in New York City when Mamdani walked on stage mid-monologue, drawing applause from the studio audience.
“Jimmy let me try one,” Mamdani said, as the crowd reacted.
“It’s so cold in New York City the rent froze itself. Goodnight everybody,” Mamdani quipped before turning to leave the stage.

The joke referenced the mayor’s controversial proposal aimed at halting rent increases across the city, a plan that has drawn criticism from property owners and fiscal watchdogs who warn it could push costs onto homeowners through higher property taxes.
Before exiting, Mamdani added a brief message to viewers. “But seriously, stay inside, stay warm, stay safe,” he said, waving to the audience as he departed.
The appearance came after Fallon himself recently faced criticism for repeatedly joking about Mamdani and New York’s freezing temperatures.
Earlier this month, Fallon used a similar line during his show on December 9, joking, “It was so cold in New York City this morning, walking to work, I saw a Wall Street stockbroker spooning with Zohran Mamdani.”
That joke was repeated on two additional episodes, drawing online attention and mixed reactions from viewers.
Monday night’s episode featured an expanded slate of cold-weather humor from Fallon, who leaned heavily into the theme as the city dealt with lingering snow and low temperatures.
“It is so cold my belly button went from an outie to an innie,” Fallon said during the monologue.
Mamdani’s unexpected cameo marked a rare moment for a sitting New York City mayor to insert himself directly into a late-night comedy monologue during an active weather emergency.
The appearance quickly circulated online as residents continued to navigate snow-covered streets, transit disruptions, and freezing conditions across the city.
