Kids S.A.F.E Gets Funding to Go to Texas

The Kids S.A.F.E. Foundation teaches firearm safety to youth. The group recently received a grant from Bexar County, Texas which will bring their program to San Antonio.

Kids S.A.F.E. has been educating youth on firearm safety and use since 2015. The Foundation operates out of Oregon, however through the generosity of their many partners, they’ve brought their training and classes to Washington, California, Arizona, Hawaii, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Missouri. Recently the organization received a grant from Bexar County, Texas, and it will enable the organization to bring their program to San Antonio.

The grant will allow the group to offer–free of charge–their Kids Firearm Safety 1 classes. The funding gives the Foundation the resources to teach their sessions “at multiple local venues, including Dury’s Guns, Mission Ridge Range, Buck & Doe’s Mercantile, and A Place to Shoot Texas.”

“The grant from Bexar County highlights the critical importance of firearm safety education for families and communities,” the foundation said in a release. “With accidental firearm injuries continuing to be a problem, the Kids S.A.F.E. Foundation is committed to delivering engaging, age-appropriate instruction that empowers kids to respond safely if they encounter an unsecured firearm.”

Kids S.A.F.E. is planning on bringing the classes back to the Lone Star State this August, 2025. The group says that their program will “include hands-on demonstrations by trained instructors, safety information, and expert guidance tailored for children and their parents or guardians.” The foundation is hopeful that families in the San Antonio area will take advantage of the program’s offerings and they’re encouraging people to participate in the free sessions.

The organization says that this is an “opportunity to learn and practice firearm safety in a supportive, educational environment” and that the class is tailored towards children ages 4 and up.

“This grant allows us to deepen our impact in the San Antonio community and continue our mission to prevent accidental shootings through education,” said Derek LeBlanc, president of the Kids S.A.F.E. Foundation. “Partnering with these trusted local gun stores or ranges gives families greater access to our life-saving classes, completely free of charge.”

The Kids S.A.F.E. Foundation is no stranger to the pages of Bearing Arms. In the past, we’ve covered many of the foundation’s generous donors, as well as some of their more historic teaching moments.

The 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization celebrated a huge milestone at the end of 2024. The group surpassed teaching over 30,000 youth. Also In 2024, the Foundation added Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Missouri to the list of states the program appeared in–and that was due to the generosity of Vaultek Safe.

In 2022, LeBlanc and his instructors had an opportunity to teach gun safety to a blind child. It was an experience that LeBlanc described as rewarding. After their first session with Ryker, the foundation had a rifle and equipment specially adapted for him, to which the group subsequently taught him how to successfully fire a rifle.

Kids S.A.F.E. getting this opportunity to spread their program across the country is a great thing.
