After Electoral Wins, Left-Wing Senators Want to Keep the Government Shutdown Going

With socialism’s triumph yesterday in New York City, left-wing senators are feeling invigorated and pushing to keep the government shutdown going. As of today, the shutdown is already the longest in US history, but progressives are arguing there’s no reason to stop now.

The sweeping Democratic gains in this week’s elections bolstered the faction in the party insisting that senators dig in and force Republicans to accede to their demand for an extension of key health insurance subsidies used by more than 20 million Americans…

Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut said ending the shutdown without a commitment from President Donald Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson would “be a betrayal of all we’ve been fighting to uphold.”

“We are winning the hearts and minds of the American people,” Blumenthal said. “We’ve come this far and the American people seem to be with us.”

And of course, Sen. Sanders wants to fight on.

Sanders said that accepting a “meaningless vote” would be a “horrible policy decision” — an implicit critique of the deal some more moderate Senate Democrats are now discussing with Republicans. That agreement would not itself extend Obamacare insurance subsidies but instead guarantee a future vote on them

“Some of you may have heard the expression, when we fight, we win. You ever hear that? Well, when you cave, you lose,” added Sanders, who crashed a news conference called by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to make his case again to reporters while they waited for Schumer’s arrival.

Sen. Sanders really did take over a press conference to make his pitch that the shutdown shouldn’t end until Republicans commit to funding Obamacare indefinitely.

Chuck Schumer had yet to arrive for his briefing, so Bernie Sanders stepped up to the podium in his place and started fielding questions.

The length of the shutdown is continuing to have impacts. Just today the Trump administration announced cuts to airline flights.

The Trump administration on Wednesday announced it will reduce flight traffic by 10 percent in 40 markets across the U.S. as part of an effort to ease pressure on air traffic controllers, who will miss another paycheck next week as the government shutdown enters its second month.

The reductions take effect Friday. Details about which markets would be affected will be announced Thursday, administration officials said.

But Democrats looking at last night’s results may not care about that. So long as the public seems inclined to blame Trump and Republicans for their actions, there’s no downside to them to riding this out.

One Senate Democratic aide granted anonymity to discuss caucus deliberations said there is “enormous” pressure on the group to hold the line after Tuesday: “It’s hard for anyone to argue the message from voters is ‘Please cave ASAP to Trump.’”…

Off Capitol Hill, progressive advocacy groups and Democratic Senate candidates on Wednesday ratcheted up pressure on senators to keep holding the line after the ballot-box blowout.

Republicans “got their asses kicked last night,” said Brad Woodhouse, the executive director of the liberal health care advocacy group Protect Our Care. “Democrats should not turn around on one of the predominant issues that animated last night’s election and compromise with Republicans. It’s just anathema to political thinking.”

Just a day or two ago it seemed like Democrats were dejected and just holding out to the election before planning to cave later this week. Now they feel reinvigorated and this could drag on another week or longer. But President Trump is pretty stubborn too. I think the GOP is more likely to nuke the filibuster than commit to saving Obamacare from the end of temporary subsidies put in place by Democrats. We’ll have to wait and see if the moderates in the Democratic party feel as eager to keep this going. Maybe after yesterday’s electoral wins there aren’t many moderates left.

Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
