A man accused of fatally shooting a student and critically injuring another inside a Kentucky State University dormitory on Tuesday has been identified as the parent of a student enrolled at the school, authorities said Wednesday.

The suspect, 48-year-old Jacob Lee Bard of Evansville, Indiana, has been charged with murder and first-degree assault in connection with the attack, as reported by Fox News.

Frankfort Police said the shooting occurred inside the Whitney M. Young Jr. residence hall on the south side of campus at approximately 3:10 p.m.

Officers responded within minutes, but Kentucky State University police had already detained Bard when they arrived. Bard was transported to the Franklin County Regional Jail, where he remains held.

The shooting claimed the life of 19-year-old De’Jon Fox of Indianapolis. A second student was critically wounded and remains hospitalized. Police have not released the injured student’s name.

Authorities said the incident appeared isolated to the individuals directly involved. However, investigators have not disclosed details about what led to the confrontation or a possible motive.

When asked about reports that a fight involving Bard’s sons may have taken place before the shooting or whether Bard had come to campus to speak with school administrators regarding their safety, Frankfort Assistant Police Chief Scott Tracy declined to comment.

“It’s really too early in the investigation right now to really give any details that led up to it. A lot of it would be speculation,” Tracy said Wednesday.

Police confirmed that investigators have reviewed bystander video and campus surveillance footage as part of the ongoing inquiry.

The shooting brought a rapid response from local and campus law enforcement as Kentucky State University implemented emergency protocols.

Officials have not announced any changes to campus security procedures but said additional updates will be provided as the investigation continues.

Bard, whose home in Evansville is approximately 150 miles west of Frankfort, faces significant charges as the case proceeds. No court date has yet been announced.

The university has not released further public statements regarding the students involved, and authorities say the investigation remains active.
