A 23-year-old Minnesota woman who accused federal immigration officers of kidnapping and abuse following her arrest last week is facing pushback from the Department of Homeland Security, which says she was taken into custody after assaulting federal agents during the encounter.

Nasra Ahmed was arrested last week in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Minnesota and later spent two days in the Sherburne County Jail.

Following her release, Ahmed held a press conference in which she described the arrest as unlawful and accused Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers of racial abuse and excessive force.

Ahmed claimed she was verbally and physically assaulted by ICE agents during the arrest and said she suffered a concussion.

She described the encounter as a kidnapping and said she had never been arrested before.

“I am proud to say that I’ve survived ICE,” Ahmed said during a press conference held Wednesday.

“I’m proud to say that I stood up for what is right! And people are saying — many people are saying, including my family and friends that I will go down in history! And I will carry this on my shoulders! Here I am! Speaking in front of everyone and there’s cameras recording me and everyone is watching me right now!”

She went on to allege that ICE agents targeted her based on her race.

“I got kidnapped by ICE. They came to my neighborhood, they took me, arrested me, and detained me for two days. An ICE agent called me a racial slur,” Ahmed said.

“ICE asked to see my ID and decided it was nice to be racist and say really nasty things to me. They pushed me hard, they used a lot of violence, I got a concussion. I was screaming, I was crying, I was so scared. I’ve never been arrested in my life,” she added.

Ahmed also spoke at length about her Somali heritage during the press conference, using a metaphor that quickly circulated on social media.

“I’m proud to be Somali. To me, being Somali isn’t just eating bananas with rice — It’s a lot. It’s an interesting thing. It’s very hard to describe what it means to be Somali and what it means to be American but it’s like a cultural fusion. It’s kind of like the bananas and rice, you know?” she said.

“People think you could eat bananas with rice,” Ahmed added.

Federal officials strongly disputed Ahmed’s account of the arrest.

The Department of Homeland Security said Ahmed was taken into custody after assaulting federal officers, not because of her race or immigration status.

“Secretary Noem has been clear: anyone — including U.S. citizens — who assault law enforcement will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Assaulting law enforcement is a felony and a federal crime,” the DHS said in a statement.

According to DHS, the arrest occurred during a law enforcement operation and escalated when Ahmed allegedly assaulted agents.

Officials did not provide further details on the nature of the alleged assault but said the use of force by officers was consistent with standard procedures when an officer is attacked.

The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of ICE enforcement actions in Minnesota and increased public protests targeting federal immigration authorities.

DHS officials have repeatedly stated that officers are operating under federal law and are authorized to take enforcement action when they encounter individuals who interfere with or assault law enforcement.

No criminal charging documents related to the alleged assault have been publicly released as of this writing, and it remains unclear whether Ahmed will face federal charges stemming from the incident. DHS has not commented on whether body-camera footage exists or will be released.

Ahmed’s claims have drawn attention online, with some supporters framing her arrest as an example of ICE misconduct, while others have pointed to DHS’s statement as evidence that the arrest followed an alleged attack on officers rather than an unlawful detention.
