Gavin Newsom Says He Wants to ‘See Trans Kids’ During Interview [WATCH]

California Gov. Gavin Newsom reaffirmed his support for transgender-related policies during a recent appearance on The Ezra Klein Show, including comments about transgender children and women’s sports that continue to draw scrutiny as the issue remains politically divisive nationwide, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.

Newsom appeared on the podcast hosted by New York Times columnist Ezra Klein, where the discussion covered a range of topics including the 2024 election, President Donald Trump, and social issues.

During the interview, Newsom acknowledged that his position on transgender issues is unpopular with a large portion of the public but said he remains committed to it.

“We didn’t get into trans sports. That’s an issue no one wants to hear about because 80 percent of the people listening disagree with my position on this,” Newsom said.

“But it comes from my heart, not just my head. It wasn’t a political evolution.”

When pressed by Klein to explain his stance further, Newsom stated that his views are personal as well as political.

“To see trans kids,” Newsom said when asked directly about his position.

Newsom went on to cite a personal connection, adding, “I have a trans godson.”

He also emphasized his legislative record in California, saying, “There’s no governor that’s done more pro-trans legislation than I have. No one has been a stronger advocate for the LGBTQ community.”

The governor acknowledged that the issue of transgender participation in sports remains controversial and that his position is out of step with most voters. Despite that, Newsom indicated he has no plans to change course.

During the same interview, Newsom sharply criticized President Donald Trump, calling him “One of the most destructive presidents and human beings” of his lifetime.

Newsom also referred to himself as a “future ex-governor” and said he has to look his children “in the god**** eye” when making decisions on these issues.

Newsom’s comments come as Democrats continue to debate how aggressively to pursue transgender-related policies following the 2024 election, in which exit polling and post-election analysis showed strong public resistance to transgender participation in women’s sports and other related issues.

While Newsom acknowledged the political risk of his stance, he framed his position as a matter of conviction rather than strategy.

He said his views were not the result of shifting political calculations but stemmed from deeply held beliefs.

The governor has previously signed multiple pieces of legislation expanding transgender protections in California, including laws related to healthcare access, school policies, and anti-discrimination measures.

His comments on the podcast underscored that he views those actions as a central part of his legacy.

The interview quickly circulated online, with critics pointing to Newsom’s own admission that “80 percent” of listeners disagree with him as evidence that the issue remains a political liability.
