A heated exchange unfolded on the Minnesota House floor as Rep. Walter Hudson accused state leaders of undermining federal immigration authority, drawing comparisons to rhetoric surrounding the January 6 Capitol riot.

Hudson sharply criticized what he described as language used by members of the majority party regarding federal immigration enforcement.

“They come to our state, it’s an invasion. It’s an occupation. People are being kidnapped, not detained, not arrested, kidnapped. Rhetoric like that,” Hudson said.

He argued that such statements challenge the legitimacy of federal power. “And the stance that your party has taken from top to bottom, from Governor Walz all the way down, that there is no legitimacy to federal authority, is nothing less than insurrectionist rhetoric,” Hudson said.

“That is why, that is why, take your moment. Take your moment. I got mine. Take your moment to digest that. Look it up. The number of lawyers that are laughing at me right now,” he continued.

Hudson questioned whether his colleagues understood constitutional authority. “Do you understand how the Supremacy Clause works? Do you understand what insurrection is? It’s the undermining of federal authority.”

Referencing past debates over January 6, Hudson said, “January 6, thank you so much for bringing that up. You guys went on and on and on about that for what four years.”

“Yeah, it’s still celebrated as a holiday on your side of the aisle,” he added. “One riot on one day. It’s an attack on democracy. You ran an entire election on it for months and weeks on end.”

Hudson then broadened his criticism to specific state officials. “We have had the top law enforcement officer in this state, the governor in this state, the mayor of Minneapolis and many of you actively undermine federal authority when it comes to immigration law,” he said.

He also referenced two individuals by name. “And acting upon that rhetoric, people like Renee good and people like Alex pretty put themselves in harm’s way. They did what you asked them to do.”

At that point, another House member interrupted with a formal objection.

“Point of order Madam Speaker. Personality is not allowed in debate,” the unidentified member said.

“We are not going to allow you. We are not going to allow you to impugn community members who have been murdered by the federal government,” the member continued. “How dare you? That is shameful.”
