MIT Professor Shot and Killed in His Massachusetts Home [WATCH]

An MIT professor was shot and killed inside his home in Brookline, Massachusetts, on Monday night, prompting a homicide investigation by local and state authorities, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.

Police identified the victim as Nuno Loureiro, 47, a nuclear science and engineering professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Loureiro was shot multiple times inside his apartment on Gibbs Street and later died at a Boston hospital early Tuesday morning, according to officials.

Brookline police responded to a report of gunshots at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Monday. Upon arrival, officers found Loureiro suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

“A victim was located who had been shot multiple times,” Brookline Police Deputy Superintendent Paul Campbell told WBZ-TV.

Loureiro was transported by ambulance to a Boston hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday morning. Authorities have not released details about a suspect or a possible motive, and no arrests have been made.

“This is an active and ongoing homicide investigation,” the Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey’s office said in a statement.

A neighbor told CBS News they heard several loud noises before realizing something was wrong.

“I thought at first it was somebody in our apartment kicking in a door or something, so I called the neighbors, and they said no, they thought it was gunshots,” the neighbor told CBS News.

MIT confirmed Loureiro’s death and identified him as a recently appointed leader within the university’s research community.

Loureiro, a native of Portugal, had been named director of MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center earlier this year.

“Loureiro is taking the helm of one of MIT’s largest labs: more than 250 full-time researchers, staff members, and students work and study in seven buildings with 250,000 square feet of lab space,” MIT said in a statement released earlier this year.

MIT also detailed Loureiro’s academic background and tenure at the institution.

“A theoretical physicist and fusion scientist, Loureiro joined MIT as a faculty member in 2016, and was appointed deputy director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC) in 2022. Loureiro succeeds Dennis Whyte, who stepped down at the end of 2023 to return to teaching and research,” MIT said.

Brookline police have not disclosed whether the shooting appeared targeted or random, and investigators have not said whether they are actively searching for a suspect. Campbell confirmed that no one is currently in custody.

The killing has raised concerns in the Brookline community, where violent crime is relatively uncommon. Police said they are continuing to interview witnesses and examine evidence collected at the scene.
