Sen. Eric Schmitt said he is undeterred by a $50 billion lawsuit filed against him by China, arguing the legal action is retaliation for exposing what he described as the Chinese Communist Party’s role in unleashing COVID-19 on the world and for highlighting dangerous weaknesses in global supply chains.

Schmitt said the lawsuit is an attempt at intimidation following a $24 billion judgment in Missouri against China tied to the pandemic.

“Violence is an attempt to intimidate,” Schmitt said.

“But I got news for the Chinese Communist I’m from the show me state. We don’t scare easily. So bring it on.”

Schmitt said Missouri secured a $24 billion judgment against China over allegations that Chinese authorities lied and deceived the world about the origins and spread of COVID-19.

“So we got a $24 billion judgment in Missouri against Communist China for unleashing COVID on the world because they lied and they deceived the world,” he said.

He cited specific actions by Chinese authorities that he argues demonstrate deliberate concealment of the virus’s spread.

“A couple of examples of that, Kellyanne, they cut off flights in and out of Wuhan domestically, but not internationally when they knew the coronavirus had leaked from the Wuhan lab,” Schmitt said.

He also pointed to China’s actions involving personal protective equipment ahead of the global outbreak.

“They were the largest net exporter of PPE and then became the largest net importer of PPE in December of 2019 before they told the world about covid,” Schmitt said.

Schmitt said China’s response to his criticism has been to file what he described as a baseless lawsuit against him personally.

“They’re responsible for unleashing this virus on the world, and we exposed all that, and they don’t like it now, so we got a $24 billion judgment,” he said. “They have this ridiculous 50 billion $50 billion lawsuit against me.”

Schmitt said the broader issue extends beyond the lawsuit, arguing the pandemic exposed how fragile global supply chains have become, especially when the United States relies heavily on foreign adversaries.

“But the truth is, the bigger picture here Kellyanne is we exposed, I think, the supply chains and how vulnerable they really are,” he said.

“So the most efficient supply chains aren’t always the most resilient.”

He warned that dependence on China for critical goods poses serious risks to Americans.

“So the fact that we were that reliant on materials from China, I think, is playing out now, right?” Schmitt said.

“They could, if they can shut it off.”

Schmitt said the issue is personal for him, particularly when it comes to pharmaceuticals.

“This is important to me. I have a son with epilepsy, right?” he said.

“So if they can do that on PPE, they could do it on pharmaceuticals, they could do it on critical minerals.”

He said those vulnerabilities highlight the importance of reshoring manufacturing to the United States, aligning with President Trump’s economic and national security policies.

“So I think it’s it only highlights the importance of what President Trump’s trying to do, which is to onshore this manufacturing to our country,” Schmitt said.

Schmitt dismissed China’s lawsuit as retaliatory and said he has no intention of backing down.

“But this is sour grapes by China,” he said.

“But I’m not going to be deterred. I’m certainly not going to apologize like they want me to do in the lawsuit, and it’s just a bogus deal.”
