Humiliation Rituals Abound

Nothing says “politics” more than pandering to various constituencies, and it’s not like most of us can’t recognize when a politician is being phony to send a message to some groups that he cares about them, especially their votes. 

Generally speaking, most of us don’t get upset about this because in a pluralistic society there will always be some of this, and in fact, it is rather disturbing when a politician makes clear he dislikes a significant chunk of his constituency. “I represent white people, or black people, or pledge my allegiance to some other country.

She described the U.S. as:

“Addicted to war… prioritizing imperialism, conquest, domination.”

Several Democrats have outright stated that their allegiance belongs to some other country, including my own Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. 

So I don’t get too riled up when some politician goes the other direction and displays a bit of hypocrisy while embracing people with whom he doesn’t particularly identify. It is just part of life, and the alternative can be worse. 

But there comes a point where things cross the line, and whatever group that wants to be pandered to is obviously demanding not respect, but subordination. And we have begun to see that across the West, when it comes to Islam. Muslim, and particularly Islamist ideology is totalitarian in nature and is built on a foundation that demands forced conversion. 

It’s not that other religions haven’t gone through phases similar to this; the persecution of Catholics in England is one example, and the forced conversion of the Hugonauts in France is another. The big difference is that Western societies have rejected the practice of forced conversion, and in general bend over backwards to welcome people of other faiths.

That idea is enshrined in our Founding documents and long practice, and the basis of our long-running disputes with totalitarian regimes is their hostility to freedom of conscience.

As Islam has spread in the West through migration, American politicians have been subjected to what amounts to humiliation rituals in which they are forced to declare allegiance to Muslim leadership, at least implicitly. We see video after video in which these politicians don’t just welcome Muslims, but are put into uncomfortable situations in which they are pretty obviously forced into humiliating positions. 

It’s a ritual of humiliation to test how obedient you will be.

One of my favorite genres that I have witnessed is the British police officer surrounded by Muslims performing what amounts to a hostage video. Stern-looking Muslim elders stand over the hapless victim as he recites his fealty to them.

Of course, it’s not only Muslims who have succeeded in getting politicians to perform such rituals. Almost any supposed victim group can force at least Democrats or liberals in other countries to do something similar. The most striking one was the spectacle of the Democratic leadership kneeling for almost nine minutes on marble floors (have you tried that? I did once for the Stations of the Cross, and it hurt!) in order to show their fealty to Black Lives Matter, and to honor a fentanyl and meth addict. 

Anti-White indoctrination in schools: Forcing innocent White children to bow and serve as part of a ‘celebration’ of Black History Month. This is not education, it’s humiliation. There is no place in our schools for programs that shame one race to elevate another.

Democrats also routinely mouth platitudes about white supremacy and the need to decolonize and eradicate whiteness. And for all the protests that this isn’t happening, it IS happening. 

I don’t want to live in a society where everything comes down to tribe, and most certainly don’t want to bequeath to future generations a society where anybody has to demonstrate their willingness to be subordinate to others. And, frankly, that means that totalitarian ideologies of any stripe should be rejected as incompatible with pluralism.
