Sidney Crosby Becomes Canada’s Biggest Question Mark Before Gold Medal Showdown With USA

The biggest pregame storyline before the Olympic men’s hockey final is not a line combination or a power play matchup. It is whether Sidney Crosby can go at all.

Canada coach Jon Cooper said Saturday that Crosby has not been ruled out for the gold medal game against the United States, but the veteran captain’s status remains unsettled after a lower body injury in the quarterfinal round. Crosby skated at practice, and Canada will carry the decision into game day.

Crosby, 38, was injured Wednesday in Canada’s quarterfinal win over Czechia. He left the game in the second period after being hit along the boards by Czech defenseman Radko Gudas and then taking another awkward collision later in the same shift. He did not play in Canada’s semifinal win over Finland, a 3-2 comeback that sent Canada into the final against Team USA.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

Cooper made clear Canada is not going to dress Crosby as a ceremonial extra if he is not healthy enough to play real minutes.

“Obviously we’d love to have him,” Cooper said. “He won’t put himself in harm’s way, and he’s not going to put the team in harm’s way.”

He doubled down when asked whether Crosby could suit up in a limited role simply for emotional lift.

“No. No, it’s too important,” Cooper said. “We don’t want to have somebody in there as an inspiration when we could have a player that could be capable of helping. You never know if guys are going to get hurt in the game. He wouldn’t want to do that, either.”

That is the practical version of the Sidney Crosby conversation: if he plays, he plays to contribute, not to wave from the bench.

Crosby has been productive in the tournament when available. Through four games, he has two goals and four assists in his third Olympic appearance for Canada. Even while missing the semifinal, he remained around the team and continued to influence the room, according to teammates.

Canada’s players have not been subtle about what Crosby means to them. Connor McDavid wore the captain’s “C” in Crosby’s absence against Finland and said Crosby was still involved from the bench area and locker room.

“We’ve done that, and we’ll see,” McDavid said. “He’s been around a lot. Obviously, he’s been extremely positive: still contributing, even though he didn’t play last game, but still being the leader he is.”

Nick Suzuki, who moved into Crosby’s spot between Mitch Marner and Mark Stone, said Crosby looked better during Saturday’s skate and made it clear what a return would mean before the final.

“It’d mean a lot to him and probably us,” Suzuki said. “He’s such a big leader, big voice. Everyone looks up to him. It’d be awesome if he could play.”

Canada is also dealing with another confirmed absence. Cooper said defenseman Josh Morrissey is out for the gold medal game, extending an injury issue that began earlier in the tournament. That leaves Canada managing both the Crosby uncertainty and a missing top blue line option heading into its highest stakes game of the Olympics.

The timing adds even more attention to Crosby’s status because the opponent is the United States, and the final is a true best on best game with NHL players back in the Olympics. The U.S. and Canada were already the headliners of this tournament. Crosby’s availability now sits in the middle of it.

Canada reached the final by rallying past Finland, with Nathan MacKinnon scoring the winner with 35.2 seconds left. The U.S. advanced after a 6-2 semifinal win over Slovakia. That set up a gold medal meeting between the sport’s two biggest powers, and Canada now enters the final waiting on one of the most decorated players in international hockey history.

There is no final answer yet on Crosby. The only confirmed part is the setup: he skated, he was not ruled out, and Canada is taking the decision as close to puck drop as it needs to.

For Team USA, that means preparing for both versions of Canada. For Canada, it means the last major call before the gold medal game belongs to Crosby’s body and Cooper’s staff.

Warning: Account balances and purchasing power no longer tell the same story. Know in 2 minutes if your retirement is working for you.
