A man is in custody after damaging property at Vice President J.D. Vance’s home in Cincinnati early Monday morning, according to the U.S. Secret Service, as reported by Fox News.

Authorities said the incident occurred shortly after midnight while Vance and his family were already in Washington, D.C.

In a statement provided to Fox News, the Secret Service said agents “physically detained” an adult male after he allegedly caused damage to the exterior of a personal residence.

The agency said the suspect broke windows during the incident. After being detained by Secret Service personnel, the man was taken into custody by the Cincinnati Police Department.

A spokesperson for Vice President Vance confirmed to Fox News that Vance and his family were not at the Ohio residence when the incident occurred.

According to the spokesperson, they had already returned to Washington, D.C., prior to the early morning disturbance.

Vice President Vance later addressed the incident in a statement posted on X.

“I appreciate everyone’s well wishes about the attack at our home,” Vance wrote.

I appreciate everyone’s well wishes about the attack at our home. As far as I can tell, a crazy person tried to break in by hammering the windows. I’m grateful to the secret service and the Cincinnati police for responding quickly.

Vance had been in Cincinnati as recently as the weekend.

A spokesperson previously said the vice president returned to Ohio after the conclusion of the U.S. operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of Nicolás Maduro on Saturday.

During that operation, the spokesperson said Vance joined other Trump administration officials on a secure video conference to monitor developments throughout the night.

The United States Secret Service said it is continuing to work with local law enforcement and federal prosecutors.

The agency confirmed it is coordinating with the Cincinnati Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office as prosecutors review possible charges related to the incident.

No injuries were reported, and authorities said there was no ongoing threat following the suspect’s arrest. Officials have not indicated whether the suspect faces state or federal charges, or both.

The incident comes amid heightened attention on the security of public officials’ residences, particularly when senior members of the Trump administration are traveling between Washington and their home states.

Law enforcement officials emphasized that protective measures worked as intended, allowing for a rapid response and detention.

Further details are expected once prosecutors complete an initial review of the case.
