Vice President J.D. Vance said Wednesday that the hammer-wielding suspect accused of vandalizing his Cincinnati-area home likely intended to terrorize his family, as federal charges move forward against the man arrested in the incident, as reported by The New York Post.
The attack occurred Monday at the vice president’s Ohio residence, where several windows were smashed in what authorities described as an apparent attempted break-in. Vance and his family were not home at the time.
Speaking during an interview with Fox News host Jesse Watters, Vance addressed the incident and his assessment of the suspect’s motives.
“When it happened, I think everybody had the same reaction that we did, which is it’s probably a deranged, left-wing person who wanted to cause terror, or maybe worse, among my family,” Vance said.
The vice president said he was grateful that law enforcement responded quickly and that no one was harmed.
“The person’s in custody, and we’re still kind of getting to the bottom of the motive a little bit, but my guess is the same as yours … left-wing violence is a problem in this country,” Vance said during his Wednesday appearance on “Jesse Watters Primetime.”
Authorities arrested 26-year-old William DeFoor in connection with the vandalism. Investigators said DeFoor allegedly used a hammer to smash four windows at the Vance residence in an apparent attempt to gain entry.

Law enforcement sources indicated DeFoor may have been going by the name “Julia” in recent weeks.
DeFoor is the son of a prominent millionaire family and now faces multiple federal charges related to the incident. Officials have not publicly detailed all of the charges, but confirmed they are being pursued at the federal level.
Vance used the incident to speak more broadly about political violence in the United States, saying the attack reflects a wider problem.
“We have a real crisis where there are far too many left-wing people who don’t want to debate, who don’t want to disagree, who don’t want to try to persuade their fellow citizens. They want to try to kill their fellow citizens, and that’s a real problem,” Vance said.
Despite the attack on his home, the vice president said he does not intend to be deterred from his duties and emphasized that he remains committed to serving the country.
“I signed up for this,” Vance said. “My attitude on this stuff is whatever God wills is whatever God wills.
“I’m going to do the job I have to for the American people, and you know, hopefully they’re happy with it, and hopefully we do some good, and whatever God has in store, I accept it.”

Federal authorities have not released additional details about the investigation, and no further suspects have been announced. The case remains under review as prosecutors move forward with charges against DeFoor.
