A man and a woman were shot and injured by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Portland, according to local media reports, prompting an investigation by federal authorities and renewed criticism from city officials.

Both individuals were transported to a hospital for treatment following the shooting, though their conditions have not been released publicly.

The incident occurred one day after a separate fatal encounter involving federal immigration officers in another state.

Portland police said officers responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 2:24 p.m. near Northeast 146th Avenue and East Burnside.

The area was secured as local and federal agencies began responding to the scene.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Portland field office confirmed in a social media post that it is investigating the incident.

The Department of Homeland Security provided a statement outlining the circumstances that led to the shooting.

According to DHS, U.S. Border Patrol agents were conducting a targeted vehicle stop that included what the department described as a “Venezuelan illegal alien affiliated with the transnational Tren de Aragua prostitution ring.”

DHS said that when agents identified themselves during the stop, the driver of the vehicle used the car as a weapon and attempted to run them over.

“Fearing for his life and safety, an agent fired a defensive shot. The driver drove off with the passenger, fleeing the scene,” DHS said in its statement.

The shooting in Portland came just one day after a 37-year-old woman was shot and killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers after she attempted to strike them with her vehicle, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

That incident has drawn national attention and led to protests in multiple cities.

Portland Mayor Keith Wilson, a Democrat, issued a statement criticizing federal immigration enforcement actions in the city following the shooting.

“Portland is now grappling with another deeply troubling incident,” Wilson said.

“We cannot sit by while constitutional protections erode and bloodshed mounts. Portland is not a ‘training ground’ for militarized agents, and the ‘full force’ threatened by the administration has deadly consequences. As Mayor, I call on ICE to end all operations in Portland until a full investigation can be completed.”

City Council President Elana Pirtle-Guiney also addressed the shooting during a Portland City Council meeting later in the day.

She said city officials were monitoring the situation and awaiting further information about the condition of those injured.

“As far as we know, both of these individuals are still alive, and we are hoping for more positive updates throughout the afternoon,” Pirtle-Guiney said.

The shooting occurred amid heightened tensions surrounding federal immigration enforcement operations in Portland.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek immediately sides with the suspects, saying “We are all shaken and outraged by another terrible, unnecessary, violent event instigated by the reckless agenda of the Trump administration.”

An ICE facility in the city has been targeted by protesters opposed to mass deportation efforts, and some demonstrations have escalated into violence.

Federal officials have not announced whether additional arrests were made in connection with the Portland incident, and DHS has not released the identities of those involved.

Protests have also intensified in Minneapolis following the fatal shooting involving ICE officers earlier in the week.

In response to those demonstrations, public schools in Minneapolis were shut down for the remainder of the week as a precautionary measure.

The FBI’s investigation remains ongoing, and local officials said they were continuing to coordinate with federal agencies as more information becomes available.
