Lara Trump is sharing new details about President Donald Trump’s reaction on the night he departed the White House in January 2021, describing a moment she says reflected his determination to return to office, as reported by The New York Post.

In an episode of “Pod Force One” released on Wednesday, Lara Trump spoke with The Post’s Miranda Devine about the Trump family’s final flight on Air Force One following the 2020 election.

President Trump had been defeated by Joe Biden in a 306-232 Electoral College outcome, with Biden securing six of the seven swing states.

Washington D.C., USA – May 30, 2025 – President Donald Trump leaves the White House for a trip to Pennsylvania on May 30, 2025.

The family flew to Palm Beach, Florida, where they arrived at Mar-a-Lago. Lara Trump said the mood on the plane and upon arrival was heavy.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

“It was very somber. It was an incredibly tough time for all of us, and I think it was an incredibly tough time for him,” said Lara Trump, who is married to Eric Trump. “No one really had a lot to say.”

She said President Trump gathered the family for dinner that evening.

“He told all of us that he wanted to have dinner that night. And none of us really knew how that would go. And the first thing he did, before he even sat down at the dinner table, is he looked around at all of us and he goes, ‘Well, kids, I’ve got to do it again.’”

Lara Trump cited that moment as an example of perseverance.

“Any one of the things that he had against him, especially in the four years in between terms, would have been enough for one person to say, ‘You know what? That’s it. I’m out of this. I’m never going to do it again.’ But he never gave up,” she said.

“He continued to fight for what he wanted, but what he, I think, knew was right to do.”

In the years following his departure, President Trump faced multiple legal challenges. He was federally charged in Washington, DC, and in Fulton County, Georgia, in cases related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.

Additional indictments were filed regarding alleged retention of classified documents and “hush money” payments to an adult film star before his first presidential campaign.

He also fought civil litigation in New York, including a case that resulted in a $454 million judgment tied to allegations that he inflated the value of his real estate holdings.

During the 2024 campaign cycle, President Trump also survived two assassination attempts. In July, he was wounded in the ear by a gunman while speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Two months later, another individual was accused of setting up a sniper’s nest near his Palm Beach golf course.

Despite the legal and political challenges, President Trump secured the Republican nomination in 2024 and later defeated Vice President Kamala Harris, winning all seven major battleground states.

Lara Trump said the determination she saw in 2021 echoed a similar family conversation in June 2015, before President Trump launched his first campaign.

“He wanted to make sure that we understood what that meant, because he knew it wasn’t just about him,” she said.

“He said, ‘I want to do this, but it’s not just going to involve me. All of you will ultimately become a part of this, because we all know that’s how it goes.’”

She also recalled him warning the family about potential backlash.

“I want you guys to know that if we do this right, they’re going to come after us.”

She said he also made clear his priorities at the time.

“If I do this, I want to do it right, and even if that means that I only got one term in office, that’s okay, as long as I’m doing the right thing and we’re making change that needs to happen in this country,” Trump was also recalled as saying before going on to defeat Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Asked about her own political future, Lara Trump said she had twice declined opportunities to run for U.S. Senate in North Carolina but said she “would consider something” in the future “if the time is right.”
