Acadian Ambulance reported that 13 individuals were transported from the scene, with 11 taken by ambulance and two airlifted by medical helicopter.

Emergency crews responded in large numbers as the situation unfolded, with ten ambulances and two helicopters dispatched to the scene.

The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office said several of the injuries are believed to be serious.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

Authorities identified the driver as Todd Landry, 57, of Jeanerette.

According to a news release from Louisiana State Police, Landry was charged with driving while impaired, 18 counts of negligent injuring, careless operation, and having an open container.

Officials said Landry showed signs of impairment at the time of his arrest.

He later submitted a breath sample that registered a blood alcohol concentration of 0.137%, which is approximately 71% higher than the legal limit of 0.08% in Louisiana.

The incident occurred during a public celebration marking the Lao New Year, an event that typically draws families and community members to local streets.

New Iberia, a Cajun town in southern Louisiana located about 30 minutes from Lafayette, was hosting the festivities when the crash took place.

Video shared on social media showed the immediate aftermath, with multiple individuals seen lying on the ground.

First responders, including firefighters, worked to assist victims and were seen attempting to rescue at least one person who was trapped underneath a vehicle in a ditch.

Emergency personnel remained on scene to assess injuries and transport victims to nearby hospitals.

The scale of the response reflected the number of people impacted and the seriousness of the injuries reported.

Investigators with the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office conducted a preliminary review of the incident and stated that the crash did “not appear to be an intentional act.”

Authorities have not released additional details about the condition of those injured beyond confirming that several suffered serious injuries.

The investigation remains ongoing as officials continue to review evidence and witness accounts from the scene.

The charges filed against Landry reflect the number of individuals injured in the incident, with each count of negligent injuring corresponding to victims affected by the crash.

Local officials have not indicated whether additional charges could be filed as the investigation progresses.

The Lao New Year celebration, which is observed annually by members of the Laotian community, was underway at the time of the crash.

Events typically include parades, cultural performances, and gatherings in public areas.

Law enforcement officials have not announced any changes to future event security or traffic control measures following the incident.

The crash adds to ongoing concerns about impaired driving incidents at public gatherings, particularly those involving large crowds and open roadways.

Authorities have urged anyone with additional information or video footage of the incident to contact investigators as they continue to piece together the events leading up to the crash.
