CNN data analyst Harry Enten said recent polling shows President Donald Trump maintaining stronger approval among members of his own party than other modern presidents did at the same point in their second terms.

During a discussion analyzing polling data, Enten compared Trump’s approval among Republicans to the levels seen by Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama among supporters of their own parties during similar stages of their presidencies.

According to Enten, Trump’s standing within the Republican base currently exceeds what previous presidents experienced.

“Republicans love Donald Trump more than any President’s own party supporters loved him at this particular point,” Enten said.

Enten explained that the comparison focuses specifically on approval from members of a president’s own party rather than overall national approval.

“Just take a look here. Okay, own party supporters. 21st Century presidents, own party approval about at this point in the second term, Bush was at 77% Obama was at 77% Look at this. 86% of Republicans approve of the job that Donald Trump is doing at this point that is higher than either Obama or Bush had within their own party.”

The figures cited by Enten indicate that Trump’s approval among Republicans currently stands at 86 percent, compared with 77 percent for both Bush and Obama during similar points in their presidencies.

Enten said the numbers suggest that Trump’s support among Republican voters remains strong even after years in national politics.

“At this point, Trump’s Magic Touch has not seen a war off yet when it comes to the Republican base.”

Enten also discussed the intensity of support within each president’s party by examining polling data measuring “strong approval,” which reflects voters who say they strongly approve rather than simply approve of a president’s performance.

“And what kind of approval are we talking about here? Okay, so we’re talking about overall approval here. How about the strongly approved?”

He described strong approval as a measure of particularly enthusiastic support.

“The strongly approved, not just like, but love, love.”

Enten again compared Trump’s numbers to those of Bush and Obama when examining this measure.

“Okay, we’re going to look at these same presidents again, strong approval among your own party’s base.”

According to Enten, Trump is the only president among those compared to receive majority-level strong approval from members of his own party at this stage.

“What you see here is Trump is the only one who gets a majority at this point in their presidency.”

He then provided the figures for the comparison.

“Obama was at 48% Bush was at 47% you see here Trump at 53%.”

Enten noted that while the strong approval rating is lower than the overall approval number, it still indicates a majority of Republicans express particularly strong support for Trump.

“Not as high as overall approval rating, but still getting a majority of the Republican base, at least in the average of polls, to say that they still really, really, really like him.”
