The wife of a Georgia high school teacher who died after what authorities described as a senior prank gone wrong is asking that criminal charges against the students involved be dropped, as reported by Fox News.

Jason Hughes, 40, a math teacher at North Hall High School in Gainesville, Georgia, died after being struck by a car outside his home during a late-night prank carried out by students.

According to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, five North Hall High students arrived at Hughes’ home Thursday night with toilet paper to carry out what authorities described as a long-standing senior prank tradition targeting the teacher.

The group of students planned to toilet-paper the property before leaving in two vehicles. Hughes was reportedly aware of the prank and had gone outside.

Rather than confronting the students in anger, Hughes’ wife, Laura Hughes, told The New York Times that her husband was actually anticipating the prank and hoped to catch the students in the act.

As the students attempted to leave the area, Hughes walked toward the street. Investigators said he tripped and fell into the roadway, which authorities described as slippery.

Police say Hughes was then struck by a vehicle driven by 18-year-old Jayden Ryan Wallace.

Authorities said Wallace immediately stopped after the collision. Wallace and the other students reportedly attempted to assist Hughes while waiting for emergency responders to arrive.

Hughes later died from his injuries.

Despite the fatal outcome, Laura Hughes has publicly asked prosecutors not to pursue charges against the students involved.

“This is a terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent a separate tragedy from occurring, ruining the lives of these students,” Hughes said.

“This would be counter to Jason’s lifelong dedication of investing in the lives of these children.”

According to reports, Hughes and his wife both worked as teachers at the public school and had dedicated much of their lives to education.
