A Virginia prosecutor whose campaign received financial support from groups backed by billionaire George Soros defended remarks he made following a mass shooting Thursday at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, saying those seeking someone to blame should look to lawmakers and court rulings on gun laws.

Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi addressed reporters after the shooting and later reaffirmed his comments when questioned about them.

“I absolutely stand by what I said. It is the truth, no matter how much the gun lobby wants to deny it,” Fatehi said when asked if he stood by his remarks despite the suspect having a prior record involving support for Islamic terrorism.

Authorities identified the suspected shooter as Mohamed Jalloh, according to multiple federal sources cited by Fox News.

Jalloh was described as a former National Guardsman and naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Sierra Leone.

Federal records show Jalloh was sentenced in 2017 after attempting to provide material support to the terrorist organization ISIS.

He was reportedly released by the Federal Bureau of Prisons in late 2024 during the Biden administration.

This Could Be the Most Important Video Gun Owners Watch All Year

During a Thursday evening news conference, Special Agent in Charge Dominique Evans described statements allegedly made by the suspect before the attack.

“We have confirmed reports that prior to him conducting this act of terrorism, he shouted all our stated Allahu Akbar,” Evans said.

The shooting occurred shortly before 10:49 a.m., according to an emergency alert issued by the university. Police said responding officers arrived at the scene near ROTC cadets on campus.

Norfolk Police Chief Garrett Shelton said the suspect was later pronounced dead after officers responded to the scene.

Shelton also confirmed that one victim died in the shooting and two others were injured.

Reporting from the New York Post indicated the suspect appeared to be targeting ROTC members before a bystander intervened and stabbed the attacker, stopping the assault.

Federal authorities are treating the incident as a possible act of terrorism.

FBI Director Kash Patel said Thursday that the FBI was investigating the attack.

During a press conference following the incident, Fatehi approached the podium and delivered remarks addressing broader issues related to gun violence.

“I’m constrained in what I can say about the facts of the case, but I can speak a little more freely about the bigger questions,” Fatehi said.

He praised the law enforcement officers involved in the response to the incident.

“These men work every day to make people safe,” Fatehi said.

“People are as safe on the ODU campus as anywhere, arguably safer than in other parts of Norfolk.”

Fatehi argued that the issue extended beyond the university campus.

“But this is not an ODU problem. This is a national sickness. We live in a country where people care more about guns than they care about 6-year-old children. They care more about guns than they care about synagogue worshipers. And they care more about guns than they do about college students.”

He added that even with strong safety measures in place, incidents could still occur.

“No matter the ideology of an attacker, that attacker is more dangerous with a gun than without one,” Fatehi said.

The prosecutor continued by saying that law enforcement and institutions alone cannot prevent every attack.

The remarks generated criticism on social media from several commentators and conservative figures.

Bearing Arms editor Cam Edwards wrote on X, “I really try not to cuss here, but Fatehi can f— right off with this statement.”

RedState writer Bonchie also criticized the comments in multiple posts.

“Given this lunatic is the DA, there’s like a 90% chance he’s going to charge the hero who stabbed the Islamist to death to stop the attack,” Bonchie wrote.

In a separate post, Bonchie added, “You see, ISIS terrorists wouldn’t be terrorists if it weren’t for Republican gun culture or something.”

Amy Swearer, a senior legal fellow at Advancing American Freedom, also criticized Fatehi’s comments.

“I generally stop short of telling bad faith morons to go to hell because eternal damnation isn’t a trifling matter, but this level of intentional and malicious imbecility is testing my resolve,” Swearer wrote on X.

Fatehi later expanded on his position during the press conference, pointing to lawmakers and judicial rulings as the source of the problem.

“Until there is the political will to break the spell of the cult of gun absolutism, you will see more incidents like this,” Fatehi said.

“So, if you are looking for somebody to blame, don’t look at anybody up here, look at our lawmakers who don’t have the courage to implement sensible gun control measures, look to a Supreme Court that enables them, and do something about it. That is the lesson – let’s mourn the people who’ve died, let’s decry what has happened, but let’s keep the focus where it belongs. It belongs on us, and having to change something so that we don’t have to suffer through this.”

Fatehi has served as the Commonwealth’s Attorney in Norfolk since 2022.

Campaign finance records reviewed by Fox News Digital show that his campaign received donations from Justice and Public Safety PAC and Democracy PAC, two political groups backed by Soros.

According to Fox News Digital, those PACs contributed more than $650,000 combined to Fatehi’s campaign between 2021 and 2025.

The Capital Research Center, a nonprofit organization that tracks political spending, reported that Soros spent $40 million on Justice and Public Safety PAC between 2012 and 2022.

The group also reported that Democracy PAC, a super PAC created by Soros in 2019, received nearly $30 million in the first three months of 2020.

The Capital Research Center noted that several prosecutors supported by Soros-backed political groups have served in major cities, including recalled San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin, former Chicago District Attorney Kim Foxx, and former Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon.

The investigation into Thursday’s shooting remains ongoing as federal and local authorities continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the attack.
