Colorado’s spring calendar brought a different kind of team meeting this week, one that had less to do with depth charts and more to do with how quickly circumstances can change in football, and in life.

Two new members of Deion Sanders’ staff, offensive coordinator Brennan Marion and cornerbacks coach Aaron Fletcher, spoke to the team about periods when they were homeless. The message was delivered to players during spring camp as Sanders continues reshaping his staff following Colorado’s 3–9 season in 2025.

Fletcher is new to Boulder as the Buffaloes’ cornerbacks coach. Marion, hired to run the offense, has been introduced internally as a tone-setter as much as a play-caller. The point of the meeting, as it was framed inside the program, was motivation: two coaches describing what it looked like to have nothing certain, then using that experience to define expectations in a Power Four environment.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

After the coaches spoke, Sanders addressed the team with a practical reminder about the structure players have in a college football program. The message that followed emphasized that Colorado players are provided three meals per day, and that the program expects something back in return: effort and urgency, rather than complaints about the basics.

That “free meal” theme has already been a recurring line from Marion since arriving in Boulder. In a separate meeting earlier this offseason, Marion told players, “Some of y’all are ungrateful as hell — won’t eat a free meal, don’t like the clothes that you wear that are free. All this stuff is free. This is the last time in your life that everything will be free for you.” The comments were delivered as part of the program’s attempt to reset standards and get buy-in for a staff that looks noticeably different heading into 2026.

Colorado’s staff overhaul has included hiring Marion to run the offense and elevating Chris Marve to defensive coordinator, among other changes. The homelessness discussion involving Marion and Fletcher added personal context to that broader restructuring, and it landed at a moment when the program has been working to reestablish its internal baseline for how players approach meetings, practice, and day-to-day routine.

From a football standpoint, Sanders and the Buffaloes have framed spring camp as the start of a new cycle. From a program standpoint, the staff has used meetings like this to make the point that college football provides resources and structure that do not last forever, and that the job for players is to take advantage of them while they have them.

Colorado’s spring game is scheduled for April 11, giving fans their first real look at how the revamped staff and roster translate to the field.
