Wednesday, March 18, is built around the final night of the NCAA men’s First Four, with two elimination games in Dayton that complete the 68-team bracket before the full first round begins Thursday. After that, the strongest national windows belong to the NHL, where TNT carries New Jersey at the New York Rangers and Dallas at Colorado, and to the NBA, where a crowded Western Conference race puts added weight on Lakers-Rockets, Nuggets-Grizzlies and Warriors-Celtics. The NIT also continues with first-round games across campus sites.

First Four Finishes the NCAA Men’s Bracket
The most important events of the day are the two First Four games at UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio. Prairie View A&M vs. Lehigh is the early game at 6:40 p.m. Eastern, followed by Miami (Ohio) vs. SMU at 9:15 p.m. Eastern. The winners advance and join the round of 64, which  begins on Thursday. Both games air on truTV.

Prairie View A&M and Lehigh are playing for the South Region’s No. 16 seed. The winner advances to face No. 1 Florida in the first round. Prairie View A&M enters 18-17 after a late push that included four straight wins in the SWAC tournament.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

The late game carries even more national attention because Miami (OH)) was one of Selection Sunday’s biggest stories. The RedHawks enter the matchup with SMU touting a record of 31-1 following a historic regular season.  The winner moves on as an 11-seed  set to face No. 6 Tennessee in the Midwest Region. Plus, eyes will be on Miami (OH) at the national level with people wondering just how good they really are following their undefeated regular season.  Many, including the committee, have voiced concerns about their opponents and strength of schedule.

NHL Games With Playoff Weight
The NHL’s best television window starts at 7 p.m. Eastern when the Devils visit the Rangers on TNT. The Eastern Conference race remains tight as teams are entering the stretch run. A regulation result matters because both clubs are still trying to solidify their path in the conference bracket.

Pittsburgh at Carolina, also at 7 p.m. Eastern, is another game with direct consequences. The Penguins enter at 34-18-15 with 83 points and the Hurricanes at 42-19-6 with 90 points. That makes it relevant to the Metropolitan race and the wild-card picture at the same time, particularly because the season series is even and the Penguins are trying to keep pressure on the teams above them.

The late NHL headliner is Dallas at Colorado at 9:30 p.m. Eastern on TNT. Colorado maintains the strongest odds in the West to reach the conference final, with both clubs viewed as major factors in the Western bracket, the game matters beyond two points in the standings because it is a direct measuring stick between likely postseason teams.

NBA Western Conference Traffic Jam
The NBA’s most important game Wednesday is Lakers at Rockets at 9:30 p.m. Eastern. The matchup is among a packed nine-game slate, but this one stands out: Los Angeles enters 43-25, Houston 41-26, and the season series is tied 1-1, meaning Wednesday decides the tiebreaker if the teams finish even. Monday’s Lakers win gave them a 1.5-game lead over Houston for the West’s No. 3 spot, so the rematch carries direct seeding implications.

Denver at Memphis is another Western game to watch. Denver is in a tight race for fourth place with Houston and Minnesota, which raises the value of every result involving the Nuggets over the final month. Memphis gets the home floor, while Denver arrives after a 124-96 win over Philadelphia, so the game matters in the crowded band beneath Oklahoma City and San Antonio.

Boston vs. Golden State, meanwhile, is the most recognizable interconference matchup on the board.  Boston enters at 45-23 and Golden State at 33-35, with the Celtics still chasing the top of the East and the Warriors trying to protect a play-in position in the West. It is not the most important game by bracket math, but it remains one of Wednesday’s biggest draws because of the teams involved and because both sides still have seeding at stake.

NIT First Round Continues
The NIT also deserves a place on Wednesday’s list because its first round continues at campus sites. Among the games to watch is No. 1 seed Wake Forest vs. Navy at 7 p.m. Eastern on ESPNU. The NIT does not carry the reach of the NCAA tournament, but Wednesday is still an elimination night in a national postseason event, which makes it relevant for teams extending their seasons after missing the main field, particularly if your team did not make the big dance.

Taken together, Wednesday’s slate is about entry and position. Dayton decides the final two spots in the men’s tournament field, the NHL offers two nationally televised games with playoff implications, and the NBA’s Western Conference race adds real weight to a packed evening board.
