Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said Tuesday that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents deployed to Philadelphia International Airport could face arrest if they commit crimes within the city’s jurisdiction, as federal authorities continue to address staffing shortages tied to the ongoing Department of Homeland Security shutdown.

Krasner made the remarks during a press conference at the airport, where ICE agents have been deployed to assist amid reduced staffing levels at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints.

The shutdown, which entered its 40th day on Wednesday, has led to operational challenges across airports nationwide, including extended wait times for travelers.

“This is how it works,” Krasner said.

“You commit crimes within the jurisdiction that is the city and county of Philadelphia, I prosecute you. That is how it works. No, I don’t take a phone call from the president saying ‘let him go.’ No, the president cannot pardon you. I’ll say it again, the president cannot pardon you. And yes, I will put you in handcuffs, I will put you in a courtroom, and if necessary, I will put you in a jail cell if you decide to make the terrazzo floor of this airport, anything like what you did in the streets of Minneapolis, which involved criminal homicide of unarmed innocent people.”

“We are not having that here,” Krasner added.

The deployment of ICE agents follows action by President Donald Trump, who authorized federal resources to assist at airports experiencing disruptions due to TSA staffing shortages.

With TSA employees working without pay during the funding lapse, absenteeism has increased, contributing to longer lines at security checkpoints. Some airports have reported wait times exceeding four hours.

In a statement released Sunday, the Department of Homeland Security said the administration was taking steps to address the situation and reduce delays for travelers.

“Because of the Democrat shutdown, President Trump is using every tool available to help American travelers who are facing hours long lines at airports across the country — especially during this spring break and holiday season that is very important for many American families,” the statement read.

“This pointless, reckless shutdown of our homeland security workforce has caused more than 400 TSA officers to quit and thousands to call out from work because they are not able to afford gas, childcare, food, or rent.”

The department said ICE personnel, who are already funded by Congress, are being deployed to support TSA operations and maintain airport security.

“While the Democrats continue to put the safety, dependability, and ease of our air travel at risk, President Trump is taking action to deploy hundreds of ICE officers, that are currently funded by Congress, to airports being adversely impacted,” the statement continued.
