Rep. Byron Donalds called for ending the Senate filibuster, arguing that the procedural rule is preventing progress on key funding measures and contributing to disruptions affecting multiple federal agencies.

Donalds said the filibuster has become an obstacle rather than a tool for compromise, particularly as lawmakers remain divided over funding bills tied to immigration enforcement and national security operations.

“Look number one, it’s time for the Senate filibuster to end. We are witnessing what happens with that. It does not breed compromise. What it breeds is pure obstruction. It’s not helping the country,” Donalds said.

He pointed to a range of public policy issues that he said have stalled due to opposition from Senate Democrats, including funding for agencies responsible for border enforcement and security.

“There are many public policy issues that simply cannot be solved because Chuck Schumer. Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats want to oppose Donald, Donald Trump and this administration, because they want to score political points,” Donalds said.

According to Donalds, the funding impasse has affected multiple federal agencies beyond Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He cited impacts on border agents, the Coast Guard, Customs, and the Secret Service.

“It’s not just the ICE agents that are not being funded. It’s the it’s our it’s our border agents that are not being funded as well. They’re not being paid. You have Coast members of the Coast Guard not being paid, customs not being paid, members of Secret Service not being paid. This is a travesty,” he said.

Donalds also addressed broader immigration policy disputes, stating that Democrats have supported policies he described as open borders. He linked those policies to public safety concerns and the outcome of the 2024 presidential election.

“I get it. The Democrats want wide open borders and no enforcement of immigration and customs, but they lost the presidential election in 2024 and the number one reason they lost that election is because their radical open borders policy, which has led to the death of young women all across America at the hands of criminal illegal aliens the United States of America and our people said, Absolutely not,” Donalds said.

He argued that Senate leadership bears responsibility for the ongoing stalemate and called on lawmakers to reconsider their approach to negotiations.

“So this rises and falls with Chuck Schumer, I would say for leader Thune, he’s got to wise up and realize this is not 1995 anymore. These aren’t the old Clinton Democrats that you could get into a room and negotiate with in good faith. These people are radical. They are unhinged. They have an ideology that is not support the American people, our Constitution, or, quite frankly, Western civilization,” Donalds said.

Donalds said that if negotiations remain unsuccessful, Republicans should move forward with legislative action without relying on the filibuster.

“And so if they’re not going to negotiate, then you got to just roll them over. Get rid of the filibuster, pass the spending bills, and let’s get this, that piece of the government back open. It’s what Donald Trump has been calling for. It’s what myself and many of my colleagues have been calling for we have seen enough,” he said.

He concluded by criticizing Democrats’ political approach, arguing that their actions are driven by a focus on power.

“And the Democrats, to be blunt, they’re not living in political reality. They want to change the political reality of the United States, and they just want power. That’s what this is about,” Donalds said.
