The SAVE Act is a big piece of legislation that we’re not talking about much because, while it’s important, it has absolutely nothing to do with the Second Amendment. It’s about preventing voter fraud, which is important as hell, but it’s just not in our wheelhouse. Our sister sites, however, have been all over it and doing amazing work covering the bill, the attacks on the bill, and the stupidity being foisted on the American public under the ridiculous guise of being reasoned arguments.
We talk about guns, gun rights, gun control, and things of that ilk. We like our little corner of the universe.
Unfortunately, Texas Gun Rights noticed something with the SAVE Act, and we need to talk about it. It’s not the bill itself, mind you, but a proposed amendment that’s the problem.
Democrat U.S. Senator Chris Coons is at it again.
While Americans focus on the SAVE America Act (S. 1383), anti-gun Democrats in Washington are quietly trying to hijack the bill with a backdoor gun control amendment that strikes directly at your Second Amendment rights.
What This Amendment Actually Does
Coons’ Amendment 4655 would effectively outlaw nearly all private firearm sales and transfers in the United States.
Under this proposal, you would no longer be free to sell, gift, or transfer a firearm to another law-abiding citizen without federal government involvement.
Instead, nearly every transfer would be forced through a federally licensed dealer (FFL).
That means:
- Government paperwork
- Permanent records
- Federal oversight of private transactions
The amendment states: “It shall be unlawful… to transfer a firearm… unless a licensed dealer has first taken possession of the firearm.”
In plain English?
It is the same Universal Gun Registration scheme Texas Gun Rights has been warning Texans about for years.
The original post is a little light on the links here, so I had to do some looking. A quick Google search doesn’t pull anything up about this amendment at all, instead bringing up amendments from past years for similarly numbered bills. Bill numbers get recycled, after all, and what is the SAVE Act today was something else last year and something even more different the previous year. And so on.
But all of the information has to be public, so I found it–it wasn’t that difficult, mind you. I’m not some super sleuth. It just wasn’t as easy as it should have been–and yeah, they nailed it.
This is Coons’s attempt to sneak universal background checks into law by putting it in the SAVE Act or to kill it entirely. Either way, Democrats get something they want. This isn’t all that unusual. There are nearly 400 proposed amendments to the bill, and I literally haven’t thought about looking at each one. Most are piddly things like naming a post office after some community leader, or something equally groundbreaking.
But this. This is an attempt at a poison pill.
What Coons is doing is trying to put something in the SAVE Act that he knows every gun rights group in the country will turn on, thus using us to kill legislation important to President Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans.
He’s playing games with our gun rights.
Oh, I’m sure he wants the universal background checks. I have no doubt that he’d love to see that happen. If it doesn’t kill the SAVE Act, he’d be thrilled to have that as law.
I just find it a little hypocritical since just a couple of days ago, he made a big thing about joining with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to address the “bloated federal criminal code,” my streamlining it, and making it so regular folks like us can actually know what’s legal and what isn’t. So, he announces that on March 31, then does this, which creates an entirely new criminal offense? Doesn’t seem consistent, does it?
But the upside is that an amendment has to be voted on individually by lawmakers. They have to see what it is, approve it, and then it’s part of the bill. Both sides use these to beef up and tone down bills, which is why they’re voted on individually. This can’t sneak in without Republicans allowing it to happen, and I seriously doubt they’re going to let it.
They need this too badly to let gun control turn people like us against them.
Still, it’s telling, and it’s disgusting. Coons should be ashamed of himself, but I doubt he has any shame.
Editor’s Note: The radical left will stop at nothing to enact their radical gun control agenda and strip us of our Second Amendment rights.
