When I covered the Hungarian elections on Monday, with the dethroning of Viktor Orbán after 16 years in office and the ascendance of Péter Magyar, I had to admit to being disheartened by descriptions of the younger man as wanting closer ties with the European Union.
Would that, I wondered, mean a complete renunciation of all the bulwarks against EU encroachment on so many fronts that had kept Hungary recognizably Hungarian? The staunch stand against unfettered immigration was the first and foremost thing that sprang to mind, a stand for which Hungary had paid dearly in withheld EU funding and penalties. The bureaucratic corruption and cozying up to Putin that Magyar swore to root out were long overdue and could only stand to benefit the Hungarian people in the long run. But the economic stagnation they are suffering at the moment is another critical issue that will have to be addressed, and would those withheld EU funds be too much to resist, despite Magyar’s conservative promises?
The prime minister-elect has begun making the parliamentary rounds required in anticipation of forming his government, and with a healthy majority for his party, it won’t be a fight over coalition-building.
In what I thought was truly a strange way to start the process off, Magyar made his way to the Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok’s office to present himself, ask him to dissolve the old Orbán government, get the requisite picture…and then proceeded to trash the smiling older man standing next to him.
I don’t think I’ve ever read anything like this in my life.
I have arrived at the Sándor Palace to meet the President of Hungary.@DrTamasSulyok is unworthy of representing the unity of the Hungarian nation. He is unfit to serve as the guardian of legality. He is not fit to serve as a moral authority or a role model.

…He is unfit to serve as the guardian of legality. He is not fit to serve as a moral authority or a role model.
Following the formation of the new government, Tamás Sulyok must leave office immediately.
VURT THE FURK?!
It is also baffling to Magyar fans who read it.
Denigrating your opponents to this extent will work against you Peter.
You have our support, but keep it honorable and respectable.

It struck many as odd and, at the very least, in very bad taste, whatever his personal reasons.
The president is elected by the parliament for a 5-year term. Why should he resign in advance? What transgressions has he committed? You are very vague.

He did explain himself afterwards, but still – there are other ways to put someone on notice the first day.
Péter Magyar after his meeting with Hungary’s President Tamás Sulyok:
He should be voluntarily leaving his office.
If he does not leave voluntarily, we will use the mandate given to us by the voters.

He sees Sulyok as a symbol and tool of the Orbán corruption, and that was a campaign promise – eradicating it ruthlessly. He fully expects the president to resign in short order.
That awkwardness over, Magyar went on to the next surprise – a very warm phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Where the PM-elect invited his Israeli counterpart to visit Hungary, in direct contravention of the warrant for his arrest that the International Criminal Court has issued.
How about them apples?
Péter Magyar, like Orbán, has invited Netanyahu to Hungary—signaling he would not enforce the International Criminal Court warrant against him.
Hungary, as an International Criminal Court member, is obligated to arrest Netanyahu if he enters the country. https://t.co/BXzGWNQe99

He then told the Hungarian state media channel during a cringe-inducing live broadcast interview that he was going to suspend ‘this lying news service.’
WOOF
Talk about being taken to the woodshed.
Péter Magyar announces major policy during a live studio interview on Hungarian state TV channel M1:

It took an unprecedented mandate from over 3.3 million Hungarians for the leader of the strongest party to finally be allowed back on air.
We will immediately suspend this lying news service.
After we form the government, one of our very first tasks will be to shut down this factory of lies and build a real, independent public broadcaster — one where the opposition finally has a voice too.”
And all the Orbán propaganda network can do is run the ticker that says “This morning: The election-winning Tisza Party will have a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly.”
The dismantling of this kind of competitive authoritarian state must begin by restoring the independence of the media.
And then, yesterday afternoon, all the champagne glasses that were clinking just a few days ago in Brussels had to be shattering.
The Prime Minister-Elect told his country that nothing about the Hungarian policies on immigration would change. In fact, they would work on tightening security even further.
🚨BREAKING NEWS: NEW HUNGARIAN PM PÉTER MAGYAR PROMISES TO KEEP ORBÁN’S STRICT ANTI-ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION POLICY — “WE WILL MAINTAIN AND REINFORCE THE BORDER FENCE” 🔥🇭🇺

…In his first major statement after winning the elections, Péter Magyar (Tisza party) made it crystal clear: Hungary will continue the same hard line on immigration. He told the EU Commission and European leaders that Hungary will reject any migration pact or relocation mechanism, keep the reinforced border fence (and even fix the holes that “probably weren’t accidental”), and will NOT release 2,200 convicted human traffickers like Orbán did. He said: “We want to honestly protect our country and Europe from illegal immigration. Legal ways exist and must be respected.”
You can hear the Brahmin heads exploding from here.
🚨BREAKING: Hungary’s new PM has REJECTED the EU’s migration pact:
“We will still not join the pact. We will actually reinforce the border further to protect Hungary and broader Europe. We will find a way to stop the EU’s daily fine.”

Brussels fined Hungary for protecting its border and the new PM’s response is to reinforce it anyway. That’s what actual sovereignty looks like.

…Turns out the voters replaced him with someone who agrees with him on the thing that actually matters.
If he holds true to that, perhaps the breaths being held can be slowly released, and the smug congratulatory smirks of the Hillarys, baby Soros, and Von der Leyen types will freeze in horror.
And what a nifty thought that is.
Editor’s note: If we thought our job in pushing back against the Academia/media/Democrat censorship complex was over with the election, think again. This is going to be a long fight.
