Rep. Jasmine Crockett said this week that she does not believe President Donald Trump will cancel the upcoming midterm elections, addressing a claim that has circulated among some commentators, as reported by Fox News.

During a YouTube livestream on Tuesday, Crockett responded to a viewer’s question about whether she thought Trump could cancel the elections. The Texas Democrat framed her response around how such a scenario would be defined.

“I think it boils down to what is your definition of ‘cancel,’” Crockett said. “What does that look like?”

Crockett said that elections are primarily administered at the state and local levels, but argued that Trump has taken actions in other areas where she believes he exceeded his authority.

She did not suggest that the president would directly cancel the midterms, but said she anticipates other forms of interference.

“I do believe that there will be a lot of election interference and a lot of games that are played, a lot of bogus litigation, sending out ICE officers for the purpose of intimidation to polling locations, that kind of stuff. So, I anticipate election interference. I do not anticipate a ‘canceling’ of the midterms if we were to get to that point,” Crockett said.

She also referenced a past Oval Office meeting involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy while explaining her reasoning.

“That is because he has declared, if you will recall, when he had [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelenskyy in the office, and he says Zelenskyy was a dictator because he had not had elections, but you don’t normally have elections when you’re engaged in a war,” Crockett said.

Crockett went on to discuss a hypothetical scenario in which elections could be halted, suggesting it would require a broader justification tied to national security concerns.

“So, if there was a cancellation, it would be under this ‘we are under invasion attack’ thing, which you know he likes to declare that there is invasions when there aren’t. But, I think that it’s more likely that he will engage in election interference because I don’t believe that he will be able to get enough governors to go along with him to stop the elections,” she said.

Crockett’s comments come amid ongoing debate among political commentators about the integrity of future elections.

Since 2025, some liberal commentators have raised concerns that Trump could attempt to cancel or significantly alter the midterms, including speculation about the use of emergency powers.

However, such claims have not been widely echoed by elected Democratic officials.

While rejecting the idea that elections would be canceled, Crockett said she expects disputes related to election administration to continue.

She also referenced her own past claims that Republicans attempted to influence her primary race against Texas State Rep. James Talarico following her loss.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding Crockett’s remarks.

Federal elections in the United States are conducted by state and local governments, with oversight shared among various agencies and courts.

Any significant changes to election procedures would typically require coordination across multiple levels of government.

The discussion around election procedures and integrity is expected to remain a topic of debate as the next midterm cycle approaches.
