A 67-year-old passenger aboard a Carnival cruise ship died during a snorkeling excursion off the coast of mainland Australia, according to local authorities and the cruise line, as reported by Fox News.

The woman, a resident of Tasmania who has not been publicly identified, was traveling on the Carnival Splendor when the incident occurred. She was participating in a snorkeling outing near Moreton Island on April 17 when she was found unresponsive in the water.

Authorities said the woman was located near the Tangalooma Wrecks, a well-known snorkeling destination off the coast of Brisbane. Emergency efforts were made at the scene, but they were unsuccessful.

“Attempts were made to revive the woman, however, she was pronounced deceased at the scene,” a spokesperson for the Queensland Police Service told Fox News Digital. Officials added that an investigation is ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the death.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

In a statement provided to local media, Carnival Cruise Line acknowledged the incident and confirmed it occurred during a scheduled excursion.

“Carnival Cruise Line is deeply saddened by the death of a guest on Moreton Island on Friday,” the company said. “Our Care Team is supporting the guest’s family during this difficult time.”

The fatal incident took place during a four-night round-trip cruise that departed from Sydney. The itinerary included two days at sea and approximately 10 hours at Moreton Island, which is known for calm waters, shipwreck snorkeling sites, and marine wildlife.

Moreton Island, located off the coast of Brisbane, is a popular destination for cruise excursions and outdoor activities. The Tangalooma Wrecks, where the incident occurred, attract visitors for snorkeling due to the presence of sunken ships and diverse marine life.

The woman’s death came just hours before a separate emergency unfolded on the same vessel. On April 18, a male passenger in his 70s reportedly climbed over the ship’s safety rails and went overboard.

An extensive search effort was launched following the report, with crews attempting to locate the individual for several hours. The search was ultimately suspended, and authorities indicated that the two incidents are not believed to be connected.
