Former Vice President Al Gore spoke Thursday at the Sustainability in Entertainment Honors event in Los Angeles, where he discussed climate issues during a keynote conversation with actor Bradley Whitford and referenced warnings about potential long-term environmental risks.

The event, organized by The Hollywood Reporter and the Sustainable Entertainment Alliance, brought together executives and entertainment figures to focus on environmental topics in media and film.

Gore and Whitford reflected on Gore’s 2006 documentary An Inconvenient Truth, which received an Academy Award following its release.

During the discussion, Gore referenced the 2004 film The Day After Tomorrow as part of a broader conversation about climate-related concerns.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

“That movie that I mentioned, The Day After about the Gulf Stream shutting down,” Gore said.

He continued, “This morning in one of the English newspapers is a whole big article summarizing the recent dire warnings of the scientists who found yet more confirmatory information that this is a very real threat within the next 25 years.”

Whitford responded by referencing the film’s premise and the potential impact of melting ice sheets.

“Right. And for people that don’t remember from the movie, you talked very explicitly about if the Greenland ice shelf melts to a certain point, which seems probable, given what happened in Antarctica-” he said.

Gore then described current conditions involving ice loss.

“And Greenland today, Greenland is losing 30 million tons of ice per hour, night and day,” he said.

Whitford continued the exchange, raising a scenario involving rapid climate shifts. “And if there is a tipping point here where the gradual threat of climate change becomes immediate, where — if that happens and the Gulf Stream ceases to exist as we know it, we’re in an ice age in, like, 10 years,” Whitford said.

Gore responded by clarifying the timeline. “No, no, no. It would take longer — it, I mean, I’m not the expert-” he said.

Whitford interjected, “I wear makeup, Al.”

Gore then continued his remarks about the scale of potential changes.

“But I’ve spent a lot of time with them. But it would be bad. It would be very bad and would be bad on a scale that is beyond our, anything we can compare it to today,” he said.

Gore also spoke about the origins of An Inconvenient Truth, noting that the concept developed in part during his promotion of The Day After Tomorrow in 2004.

The documentary included projections about climate conditions and environmental impacts over time.

In a separate interview with The Bulwark, Gore addressed the accuracy of those projections, stating that the film’s warnings “were proven dead right.”

The Sustainability in Entertainment Honors event included participation from companies and organizations across the entertainment industry, including Netflix, Creative Artists Agency (CAA), and the Television Academy.

Attendees discussed efforts to incorporate environmental themes into film and television projects.

Stephen Markley, a writer for the Hulu series Paradise, also spoke during the event about challenges related to producing climate-focused content.

“Even after 16,000 homes in our home city burned to the ground, I can tell you from experience, it’s never been harder to get something greenlit about the climate crisis,” Markley said.
