Outgoing Texas Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett is facing renewed criticism after remarks she made about Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, which critics say mocked the governor’s disability and revived scrutiny over similar past comments, as reported by Fox News.

Crockett’s latest remarks were shared in a video posted Wednesday to her X account. In the clip, she referenced Abbott’s paralysis, which resulted from an accident earlier in his life.

“It was a tree that ended up making [Abbott] a part of the DEI class, just so y’all know. He is DEI, yes, because he is uniquely-abled, or actually he ain’t abled, child,” Crockett said in the video.

Abbott has been partially paralyzed and uses a wheelchair after a tree fell on him while he was jogging at age 26. Crockett also referenced the legal outcome of that incident, stating that Abbott became “wealthy after legislation allowed him to sue.”

The governor’s office declined to provide additional comment when contacted, instead directing inquiries to a post Abbott made on X.

In that post, Abbott wrote, “Uniquely abled,” alongside an AI-generated image depicting him in a superhero suit while seated in his wheelchair.

The remarks prompted widespread reaction online, with several commentators and social media users criticizing Crockett’s comments.

Fox News contributor Joe Concha responded on X, writing, “‘I only mocked a paraplegic and suddenly people have a problem with me.'”

A separate post from the X account, Amuse stated, “DEI? Disgraced Jasmine Crockett claims Governor Abbott is a DEI hire as a result of his disability.”

Crockett’s recent comments have also brought renewed attention to a previous controversy involving her remarks about Abbott in 2025. During that incident, Crockett referred to the governor as “Governor Hot Wheels” while speaking at an event.

“We in these hot a** Texas streets, honey. Y’all know we got Governor Hot Wheels down there, come on now! And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot a** mess, honey!” she said at the time.

Lmao remarkable.Crockett made the comment before calling Abbott a “hot ass mess.””We in these hot ass Texas streets, honey. Y’all know we got Governor… pic.twitter.com/beBQcCZkrp— Collin Rugg (@CollinRugg) March 25, 2025

The comment was widely interpreted as referencing Abbott’s use of a wheelchair. Crockett later issued a statement addressing the backlash but did not apologize.

“I wasn’t thinking about the governor’s condition,” Crockett said, explaining that her comments were intended to criticize Abbott’s policies related to illegal immigration enforcement.

“At no point did I mention or allude to his condition. So, I’m even more appalled that the very people who unequivocally support Trump—a man known for racially insensitive nicknames and mocking those with disabilities—are now outraged,” she added.

Fox News Digital reported that Crockett’s office was contacted again on Thursday for additional comment on her most recent remarks.

Crockett, who previously launched a bid for the U.S. Senate, lost the Democratic primary in March. She also chose not to seek re-election to her House seat, bringing her time in Congress to a scheduled end in 2027.

The renewed criticism surrounding Crockett’s comments comes as political figures and commentators continue to debate the boundaries of rhetoric in public office and the reactions that follow statements made on social media platforms.
