The video below sums up the problem, but he explains that you cannot store pool shock “as-is” for long periods of time because (1) the packaging wasn’t designed for long-term storage and (2) pool shock is highly reactive with metal as the video footage showed. Personally, I don’t store pool shock for emergency preparedness purposes, but I keep some because we have a pool. If you are going to store it long-term, use glass with a special glass lid … that’s how reactive this stuff can be.
Regardless, there are better options than pool shock, such as gravity filters, and I wouldn’t even try to use it to make bleach unless I were super desperate. Honestly, I’d probably be more desperate to find a water source than I would be for a sub-par purification method like transforming pool shock into bleach. But that’s just my take. Enjoy!
